“Positions,” I add, and Cody laughs.
“I was going to say new friends.”
“Friends?”
“Yeah. Julie, Gary, Derek. I feel like we’ve really gotten close since we started seeing each other, and they’re cool guys.”
I’m glad he likes them, not just because I think they’re awesome, but because I hope that, in time, we all can hang out more together.
I study his expression. “Why do you have that cocky grin on your face?”
“Because I know how much you enjoyed my hot load.”
“Did you not enjoy mine?”
“Oh, I did all right.”
He leans close and licks my lips before kissing again.
“Let’s just stay in bed all day,” he says.
“If only we didn’t have to work.”
He sighs. “Let’s call out sick.”
I laugh. I can tell he’s joking, but I’d much rather spend the day with him than working with impatient and hangry customers.
We spend a little more time lounging in the bed before we force ourselves to get up. We head into the kitchen, where I make him some crêpes.
He hugs me from behind and holds me tight. “I’m glad you have the day shift,” he says into my ear.
I like it when he holds me like this.
“It’d be better if we could just fuck around in bed all day,” he continues.
“I’ll be back tonight, and there will be plenty of time for that.”
I turn to him and kiss him. I meant to offer a light kiss, but I quickly get lost in our familiar rhythm, matching his kisses before he slides his tongue past my lips.
When we finish breakfast, I head out the door to work.
It’s a nightmare as soon as I walk through the door. The place is pretty busy today. Evidently, this is where everyone decided to come for brunch, and we’re understaffed, so it’s me and one other server working all the tables.
“Hey, man, you think you could speed it up?” a guy at a table tells me. He’s been an ass ever since he and his friends arrived, but I keep my cool and just say, “I’m all over it. Sorry about the delay.”
“Delay? This is just late.”
I roll my eyes as I head back into the kitchen.
When relief arrives, I bow out for a fifteen. I check my phone. I have two voicemails. One from Mom and the other from an unknown number. Mom’s is just asking if I can take the dog this weekend. I check the other message.
“Hey, this is Tiny. We met at Cockfight about a month ago. I asked Sebastian for your number to see if you might be interested in discussing a job opportunity with me. If you could give me a call back when you get a chance, that would be great.”
He gives me his number, and I go ahead and call him—at least so he knows that I’m at work and not ignoring him.
When he answers, he says, “Hi, Hayden. How’s it going?”
He sounds like he has all the time in the world, which makes me feel like it’s even more important to let him know that I don’t.
“Sorry. I kind of need to get back to work, but I got your message, and I didn’t want to leave you thinking I was blowing you off. I can call you over my break if that works.”
“This will be quick. I’m hiring some guys for my company. Sebastian told me you might be interested, and after talking with you, you’re just the kind of guy I’m looking for. Smart. Got your shit together. Down-to-earth. I’ve been put in charge of my own department at a fairly large financial investments firm, and I’m trying to create a team I can rely on. Not just hire whoever. I have some privileges in this position, so I know you mentioned that you don’t have your bachelor’s, but the company I work for has an educational assistance program. I figured if we put you in an assistant position while you take classes, we put you in the position to learn the ropes while helping us out. Then we can transition you into a higher position once you get your degree. I’m looking for a guy I can invest in, so if you’re in, I need you to be all the way in.”
“I would definitely be interested in that.”
More than interested. If this seriously happened, this would be one of the luckiest breaks I’ve ever had. I almost can’t believe it’s really happening.
“There’s one catch. I’d need you to be willing to relocate to Chicago. That’s where they’re moving this new department. But I’d start you off on a decent salary…with the cost of living taken into consideration.”
Chicago?
Fuck.
I think about Mom, Cody, Derek, and Gary.
I’d be leaving my family and friends behind. The people who mean the world to me.
On one hand, I’d feel bad, but on the other, this sounds like a pretty amazing opportunity. I haven’t had a break in a long time, and that’s what this feels like. A guy who’s going to help me get through school and then have a job secured for me at the end of it? That’s fucking amazing.
