“Jesus. You’re so fucking stubborn.” He sighs and I know that for now, the subject is dropped again.
“I got it from you.” Which is basically true.
“Stop with that shit. You were stubborn from the second I met you. Determined, hardheaded.”
“Wow. You’re full of compliments today. What’s new with you?” I ask him. Usually, Doc lets me know when he’s going to stop by, but he didn’t today.
“Not much. Just checking on you. How’s the roommate situation going?”
I tell him a little about Hayden and playing wingman for him. About his dickhead ex. Nothing that I don’t think Hayden would want me to share. “I’m wondering how his date went last night. I was in bed when he got home and left before he got up this morning.” I still can’t believe he’s dating, when he should just be out having a good time without commitment. He needs to be careful with that shit.
“Things are going well. He watched Wall-E with me the other night. After I head out of here, I’m going to go find out how in the hell last night went and help him get ready for tonight.” The helping him get ready thing isn’t something we’ve discussed, but I’m typically good at getting my way.
“Sounds like you two get along well.”
I shrug. “He’s good people. You’d like him. Sexy, little thing too. Not quite twink-ish enough for you.”
Doc laughs. He’s always liked them small. That’s why I caught his eye all those years ago. Then he realized I was underage and homeless, and that flipped a switch in him and he became a father figure to me instead.
“Eh. I’m too old for that shit anyway.”
I turn to look at him. “Please. I can get on Grindr and find ten guys within a mile with a daddy kink.”
We both laugh as my next client comes through the door. It’s a quick eyebrow piercing and doesn’t take very long.
When she leaves, Doc says, “So you like this kid, huh?”
I look at him, trying to figure out where he’s coming from. “I like him well enough. He’s a friend. Bakes some good-ass shit. Makes me laugh and has a big dick I got to blow.”
He rolls his eyes as if I’ve never heard him say shit like that about someone. “Sounds like you’re a little sweet on him.”
A laugh jumps out of my mouth. “First, don’t ever say sweet on him again. It makes you sound really fucking old. And I just told you I’m his wingman. How the hell does that make it sound like I’m digging him?”
“I don’t know. Ignore me, I guess.” Doc pushes to his feet. “I’m going to head out.” We say our good-byes and then he leaves. It’s not long before Leila shows up, and I head out of the shop and for home.
It smells like sugar and chocolate when I get into the condo, making my stomach growl. Jesus, Hayden and his fucking baking.
I head straight for his room. He’s in the bathroom, standing in front of the mirror with a towel wrapped around his waist as he shaves.
I plop down onto his bed. “Hi, honey. I’m home.”
He eyes my reflection in the mirror. “Hey. How was your day?”
“Fuck my day. You went out with a hot yoga instructor last night. How did that go?”
“Ugh,” he groans. “Don’t remind me of last night.”
With my arms behind my head, I lean against his pillows and watch him. “Apparently, you really do need my help getting laid. Maybe I should go on your date with you tonight. A threesome might be your only chance.”
He smiles, rinses his face, and then stands in the doorway. “It wasn’t my fault. Hot Yoga Instructor is a dickhead. He gave me shit about being a waiter because apparently, that’s not good enough for him. Then he just wanted to go home and fuck. I mean, I need to get off, but do I really want to get off with someone who looks down on me because of my job?”
No, no, he doesn’t. “You get a pass on this one. He does sound like an ass. I fucking hate people like that. There’s nothing wrong with what you do.”
“Thank you,” he replies.
“You’re welcome.”
He grins, and it’s like a reflex that I have to do the same. Hayden really is good people. “Seriously. Fuck him. You know that right?”
He nods, walks over to his closet and opens it. “I do. Thank you for saying it, though.” He pulls out two shirts—a light pink polo and mint-green tee with a V neck that looks like it will stretch across his chest nicely.
I point to the V neck and he nods, putting the other back. “Anyway, I had to send out an SOS to Derek and Gary to come and save me.”
“Why didn’t you text me?” I ask him.
