“I was having fun.”

Even I thought I might get a little jealous. Figured that would have been natural, but really, by that point, I saw Lance as more of a friend than a boyfriend, so I was just happy he was getting some action.

Cody and I just stare at each other. He has this predatory look in his eyes, as though he wouldn’t mind fucking me right here in the kitchen. Guys always think they’re gonna dominate me. That they’ll show me who’s boss, but I’m not afraid to take charge where it counts. If things would have gone any further that night, he would have been real surprised, that’s for sure.

They usually are.

“It’s a shame that we didn’t get to the fun part,” Cody says, sizing me up again. “You ready?”

“What?” My tone is severe, as though he just whipped out his dick and told me to suck it.

“The tour,” he replies as if his intention was obvious. “Don’t you want me to show you around to see if you’re interested?”

Even that sounds like innuendo. It’s all in my head—I’m so starved for sex that my brain is turning even a mundane conversation about his place into a pass.

“You would be okay with me living here?” I ask.

He tilts his head to the side. “That shit was what it was. Awkward as fuck, but you need a place to live. I need rent money. Plus, you know my buddy Travis, and there isn’t much more of a referral that you need than that.”

On the opposite side of the unit, before the wall-length windows, two bedrooms are positioned on either side of the condo. He guides me into the one on the right. It’s bare and has an adjoining bathroom and a closet.

“Not much, but it’s a decent space, I think,” he says.

“Are you kidding? This is huge compared to what I could find in Midtown right now. Why are you only charging five hundred dollars? You have to know you could be charging seven—maybe even eight hundred right now.”

I shouldn’t even be saying that, but I want to know why he’s short-changing himself like this.

“Yeah, but the place isn’t costing me any more than it did before, and I’m not exactly struggling to make a living, so I figured, if I could find a good roommate, that would be more important to me than trying to turn a profit. Money’s easier to come by than good people.”

“Sounds like something a guy with a lot of money would say.”

“Or just a guy who’s had a harder time meeting good people.”

What does he mean? And why does he sound so sad? But just as quickly as he says it, he rests his arm on my shoulder and guides me through the hall, back into the living room.

“Now, I don’t give a shit about visitors or whatever, but let’s be real.” He releases me and falls back onto the couch, pulling his bottle close to his chest. “There comes a point where, if a guy keeps staying over, he needs to be pitching in for rent. So, if you start getting serious with someone, either you go to their place or he starts paying his part if he’s dragging his ass around here all the time.”

“You’re seriously considering this?”

“Why wouldn’t I? You have cash to pay for the place?”

“Yeah.”

“Then I’m interested. I’m not going to be weird over some stupid drama that didn’t even matter. I mean, are you cool with it?”

“I think my biggest worry is it’ll get back to Lance, and…”

“Oh.” I can tell by the way his brows arch that he gets where I’m going with this. “You’re worried about your ex finding out you’re living with the guy you both almost tricked with. That he’ll think there’s something more going on here.”

“Exactly.”

“Must be real hard making decisions around a guy who doesn’t even want to be with you.”

I chuckle. There’s a sort of dark humor to the whole situation. Funny that I’m trying not to piss Lance off even though he fucking left me. But it’s a real concern I have. I don’t want to hurt him. I don’t want him to even suspect that I might have been running around behind his back, especially considering I’ve been blue-balling like a fucking monk for the past six months.

But a place for five hundred dollars is so fucking hard to come by, and Cody seems like a cool, chill guy. It’d be an easy living situation. And if Lance asks about it, I can just tell him the truth. I can’t fucking help it that I can’t afford anywhere else that’s less than a block from my job.

He leans forward and purses those lips that I’d love to see around my cock right now.

“So…we roomies or what?” he asks.

This is a huge fucking mistake. I can feel that to my very core.
