He didn’t know why she was thinking Molly was a librarian.
“Look, Ms. Carter, I don’t have time for games or gossip. The rumor about me and Molly Embers is correct. She’s mine. I’m dating her,” he said, turning his back on her.
He was not even going to attempt to be polite, or pretend he didn’t know what Rachael was up to.
“You see, I don’t get that. I don’t get how you can be with someone like that?” Rachael said.
“Like what?” Now he was getting pissed off at the insults being thrown at his woman.
“She’s so boring for you and I know she is nothing more than a stick in the mud, and trust me, you can do so much better than her,” Rachael said.
He was about to yell, and he knew Rachael wouldn’t like it, but he didn’t give a fuck.
“Am I interrupting anything?” Molly asked.
Hearing her voice was the sweetest sound, and in that moment Nate forgot he had fucked up. Closing the distance between them, he cupped her face, tilted her head back, and took possession of her mouth in a searing kiss.
“I’ve missed you,” he said, breaking the kiss. He ran his hands across the back of her neck, pulling her in against him. “Rachael was just leaving.”
The other woman looked like she wanted to commit murder.
“Hi, Rachael, bye, Rachael,” Molly said with a smile.
He wondered if she would say or do anything, but then she gritted her teeth and stormed to her car.
Nate kept hold of Molly. “Thank you,” he said.
“Was she trying to … seduce you?”
He pulled Molly into his arms. “She’s attempting to, but trust me, I have absolutely no interest in her.” Pressing his face against her neck, he breathed her in, enjoying her soft, floral fragrance. She smelled amazing.
Pulling away, he looked into her pretty eyes, and the guilt flooded him. “I’m so sorry.”
“Maybe we could talk in your office?” Molly asked.
He nodded. “Let me close up first.”
It was the end of the day, and he didn’t want any last-minute customers dropping in. He went to the gate, closed it, secured the bolt, and then walked back to Molly. He placed a hand at her back, and they walked together into the main office. He closed the door.
The heat wave had already started to disappear, and there was a chill to the air. It was why Rachael’s dress sense confused him. It was cold outside, but she was dressed in barely nothing. Pushing the other woman out of his mind, he focused on Molly, on his woman.
Molly glanced around his office and then turned toward him. He saw her cheeks were a beautiful shade of red.
“So, uh, how have you been?” she asked.
“Shit, Molly, you don’t have to—”
“I do, because I have been trying to call you, and every time Randy has picked up, he has a new excuse for you, and I get it. You don’t want to talk to me, but … what did I do wrong?”
He hated this. Hated what he’d done.
Running a hand down his face, he leaned back against his desk and reached out to grab her hands. He expected her to pull away, but then she stepped toward him, and he knew he didn’t deserve it. He had nearly fucked this up big time.
“I … no, you didn’t do anything wrong, Molly. I … freaked out.”
Her eyes went wide. “You freaked out? Nate Sinclair freaked out?”
“It wasn’t my intention. I, uh, I don’t know. I wanted to make it so good for you, and I can’t get that scream out of my head. I didn’t want to hurt you, and I totally fucked this up. I saw the blood on the bed, and I … I…” He was no coward, but he didn’t know how he could face her. “You’re the last person in the world I would ever want to hurt.”
She pulled her hands out of his and stepped toward him. “Then you owe me,” she said.
“What?”
“You heard me. Unless you tell me right here, right now, that you don’t want to be with me, and everything you have just said is a load of bullshit, then you owe me, and you owe me big.”
“You’re not pissed at me?”
Molly shrugged. “I was. I mean, I was hurt, and I did cry. The first guy I had sex with freaked out and ran away. It’s not exactly good for morale.”
“Fuck, I am so sorry.”
“Stop. You don’t need to be sorry. You don’t need to be anything.” She pressed a kiss to his lips. “I don’t know what it is we’re doing, but I know I love being around you. If you still want me to be.”
Nate didn’t know how he had gotten a second chance. He hadn’t been hiding, but he sure as shit hadn’t been doing anything to break this silence between them. He did tell Randy that if Molly called, then no matter what, he was busy, or he’d just popped out.
