He knew what a prize Lissie was. She wasn’t like any of the other girls at the school we went to. She was clever. Fuck, was she clever. I would say it’s one of my favorite things about her. And to say I was glad when she left him would be an understatement. No, I was fucking cheering.

I’ve never bothered hiding my resentment for him, and he knows it’s because of her. Cody asked me several times to stay away, and I did. But that didn’t mean I stopped trying to get her near me at every opportunity. That complete asshole never deserved her, and he was lucky to have her love.

But he never understood just how lucky he was.

Not until he lost it.

He’s easy to find, not that I thought he wouldn’t be. I knew he would run straight back to his mother’s house. I wait a couple of houses down as Axe’s baby sister walks up to the front door, dressed in church clothes, and knocks. His mother opens the door, and that’s when I shift and sneak around the back. Luckily for me, she lives on a decent-sized lot, so there are no nosey neighbors. I find him sitting on the back porch, a cigarette in his hand, and he doesn’t see me as I sneak up on him.

“Hey, asshole,” I say and hit him on the back of the head hard enough to knock him out cold. The moment his body slumps, I grab him and lift him up. He’s lost a lot of weight since we had him locked up.

I wanted to kill him immediately.

But for her, I didn’t.

I realize my mistake now, and I won’t be stupid enough to make the same mistake again.

Bambi, Axe’s sister, is already back at the car and holding the door open for me. Throwing Cody into the back seat, I climb in beside him and toss her the keys. She takes off and goes straight to the back shed at the compound. It’s a building that is designated for killing and torturing, designed for easy cleanup.

Bambi comes to a stop and climbs out.

“Go and swap with Axe,” I tell her, and she nods. She’s young, but like her brother, she’s loyal. Our families all know each other.

Carrying the piece of shit back into the room he was once held in, I throw him to the floor. I pick up a butcher knife and take pleasure in waiting for him to wake.

When he comes around, he sits up, holding the back of his head, where I’m sure a large bump has formed. He looks around, and I watch as his body tenses when he realizes where he is.

He still has Letti’s blood on him.

And that makes me even madder. My fists clench, and my jaw tightens, my anger intensifying. A fiery heat rises in my chest, making my pulse quicken. My face flushes with the force of my growing fury.

“You,” he breaths out. “You let me go. Why am I here?”

I point the butcher knife at his shirt. “How did you get that blood on you? And if you lie, I’ll cut off your hand…” I poise before finishing, “… to start with.”

“I fell,” he says, clearly lying.

I swing my arm down hard. The sound it makes when it connects is loud. His eyes bulge in disbelief as blood starts to pour from his wrist and pool around his severed hand.

Did this idiot really think a man like me would bluff?

“I warned you. And now you will fucking pay for what you did, you piece of shit.” I swing again, and this time, I go straight for his neck. His blood splatters all over me as he falls backward, the life already drained from his eyes.

“Well, fuck,” Axe says from behind me.

I drop the knife to the floor.

On my way out of the shed, I tell Axe, “Bury him where no one will ever find the asshole.”

Chapter 45

Lissie

“A broken promise.”

Milo pushes the door open and walks in—blood coats his face and arms. I have pushed myself up against the wall, unable to move. My eyes are puffy, and my head is sore from crying. And all I can think about is that it’s my fault Letti is dead.

“I asked you to let him go,” I croak as I look up at him.

Milo walks over to me and drops down into a crouch so we’re eye to eye. “You did.”

“I asked you not to kill my husband,” I whisper.

“I broke that promise,” he says, still not moving from in front of me. “He is dead, and I will not apologize for that, even though I know it will hurt you.”

A new range of emotions rushes through me.

So much fucking hurt.

Pain.

I loved Cody once, but I loved Letti more.

Of that, I have no doubt.
