Okay. He was right. I wanted to see that face. Hold him. I nodded closing my eyes tightly then gave it one more push, focusing on how it would feel to finally have him in my arms.
“There he is. Keep on going. You got it!” the doctor told me.
I opened my eyes and gave it everything I had left. The doctor stood up, holding a tiny red body with arms and legs stretched out as a cry filled the room.
“There he is.” Liam’s voice sounded thick with emotion. He kissed my head and sucked in a deep breath. “Thank you.”
The nurse handed Liam the scissors for him to cut the umbilical cord, and I laughed through my tears, watching him.
Then, I held out my arms, and our son was placed in them. He stopped crying and frowned up at me.
“Hey, little guy,” I said with a teary smile as I took him in. “I’m your mommy.” I looked up at Liam as he watched us, one lone tear rolling down his face. “And the big, tough, emotional man beside me is your daddy.”
A grin tugged at Liam’s mouth, and he laughed as he wiped the tear away.
“You are so very loved,” I told him as his little hand grasped my finger. “I can’t wait until Ozzy sees you. You’ve already got a best friend waiting at home.”
I glanced back up at Liam. “You want to hold him?” I asked.
He moved around to face me. “Yeah, but first …” He slid something from his pocket.
When I could see the small velvet box in his hand, my eyes flew back up to his face.
His gaze went from our son to me. “I wanted this moment to be the most special day of our lives. And I knew I had to wait until you were holding our son for the first time. There’s no ring or words that could ever compete with that for first place,” he said.
I let out a sob that sounded like a laugh as I stared at him, stunned. He’d not said one thing about marriage, but I had him. I didn’t care what the title was. I just wanted to be with Liam. If I had his love, that was enough.
“I wasn’t expecting you. But somewhere along the way, I did something that the powers that be thought I deserved an angel. I wish I knew what the fuck it was,” he said, then grinned as he held up the diamond. “You own me, Liberty. I want you to have my last name. I want you by my side for the rest of my life and I’m claiming dibs on the next life too. Marry me.”
In his eyes, there was more love than I ever could have hoped for in life.
I nodded. “Yes, I want that. All of it.”
He took my hand and slid the ring on my finger, then leaned down to press a kiss to my lips. “I love you.”
“I love you,” I replied.
Straightening up, he reached out his arms. “Now, I’m ready to hold our son.”
I placed him in his father’s safe embrace and my heart had never felt so full.
“Hello, Hagan Arrow Walsh,” he said as he stared down at the bundle in his arms with pride. “I’ve got a lot to thank you for.”
