“No more booze for you,” he said, his lips grazing my ear. I felt another shudder roll through me, but I was too hot to enjoy it. I needed air. My shirt was practically sticking to my skin, and I was done wearing a tie.

“Let’s go outside for a minute,” I slurred.

He nodded.

How I got off the couch was a fucking mystery, and thankfully Roe handled the talking. He told the others we’d be back in a while, and then we made our way out of the private area, which was when I realized I really had to take a leak. I managed to convey that to Roe, and we changed direction. We had to get to the other side of the club. He grabbed my hand and did the dumbest thing. He started leading me across the dance floor.

Holy fuck, I could barely walk properly. People dancing, everything moving, my mind spinning madly, the music pumping, the heat… It was stifling.

It didn’t help that the DJ had switched to playing hookup music. At three AM, it was time for people to find the person they’d share a bed with. The provocative beat, heavy and slow, rocked through me, and I looked down and reacted too slowly. When I bumped into Roe, I got assaulted by too many images of moving bodies. But they were naked this time. That’s what this was. A playground for getting laid. Grinding, sliding, kissing, and rubbing. Roe squeezed my hand harder, and I placed a hand along his side.

We were almost there.

We got through, and Roe’s body heat disappeared momentarily when he hurried to the bar and talked to someone. I leaned against a wall and scrubbed my hands over my face. Jesus Christ, I couldn’t breathe in here.

“Jake!” Roe was back. He nudged me toward the bathrooms, and he produced a key.

Damn. We just walked past the two long lines until we ended up in a private bathroom with way too bright lights.

“Fuck.” I squinted and stumbled over to the urinal, and I undid my belt and pants.

“We’re headin’ back downstairs,” I heard him say. I was too busy groaning because it felt so damn good to relieve myself. He found that funny. “Maybe we overdid it tonight.”

I shook my head and planted a hand on the wall. “No.” Tonight had been perfect—and I wasn’t ready for it to be over. In our room, I’d have no reason to be so close to him, and I still needed that. I needed my hands on him. “We’re not leavin’ yet. I’ll switch to beer.”

He let out a laugh. “Baby, you should switch to water and cake. Get some of that fat to soak up the alcohol.”

Baby.

I raked my teeth over my bottom lip and tucked myself back into my pants. Then I went to wash my hands and wondered if I’d already gone too far tonight. If there was a way to turn back. Or… Fuck, I didn’t know what I meant. But I wanted to push further. I wanted to cross lines. Keep him close. Touch him. Feel him. Have him pressed against me. He was mine tonight, right? My birthday.

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

“Hey, if you insist we stay a while longer, at least come down with me first,” Roe said. “I need to charge my phone.”

“All right.” It was a plan. We’d come back up here, and I could make more bad choices.

We headed out again, and Roe returned the key before we aimed for the exit.

The last couple of drinks I’d had were coursing through my system, pushing me between soaring freedom and limitless urges. I stopped caring about the world spinning too fast; I wasn’t feeling bad. No nausea, no headache. That was all that mattered.

The music echoed in my head almost as loudly as in the club once we ended up in the quiet corridor.

Before long, we were in the elevator going down, and I looked up at the mirrored ceiling and loosened my tie further. I was done with that thing.

“You look hella fuckin’ good tonight.”

I dropped my gaze and found him watching me with a faint smile.

Roe wasn’t shy about saying that kinda stuff to me, and he probably didn’t know that it meant something. I, of course, never said anything in return, because I was the dumbass with dumb sexuality issues. But they weren’t holding me back right now.

“So do you.”

He quirked a cute grin and walked out of the elevator. “That’s how I know Jake Denver is shitfaced. Come on.”

Hold up. My reflexes didn’t work like that. I had to pull myself out of the elevator, and Roe was a dick. He laughed at me—then saved me, because he was a nice dick. He stepped under my arm and let me lean against him, which was much better. I was close to him again.
