I’d been wrong to assume that because Beau was wealthy, attractive, and had a great family, he’d never been hurt. He’d been betrayed, but he hadn’t let it darken his spirit.
“I’ll try,” I said softly. “Not to assume the worst, I mean. To hope that things will turn out okay.”
“I’m glad to hear it.” He ran his palm down to the small of my back. “And I’m also going to try.”
“Try what?”
“To get you off again by finishing what I started earlier. Get on your back, Sunshine.”
CHAPTER TWENTY
Shelby
“The crib is assembled,” Beau said, walking into my living room. “And I need a beer.”
I kept my gaze focused on the computer screen as I responded, because I was trying to stay focused on work even though he was at my apartment at two in the afternoon on a weekday.
“I thought a fight was about to break out between you and the crib there for a little bit.”
“Those fucking instructions were bullshit. Completely counterintuitive. I had it halfway assembled and then I had to take it all the way apart and start over.”
I saved the document I was working on, which was a scintillating summary of two weeks’ worth of eminent domain research and turned to him.
“I’ll be honest, it’s nice to know you’re mortal and there are things that make you crazy. You’re usually Mr. Cool.”
“Mr. Cool, huh?” He grinned as he put everything back into the toolbox he’d brought over to assemble baby furniture. “Right now I’m more like Mr. Horny. Is your boss nice enough to let you take a break?”
I flushed at the thought of an afternoon quickie, and the feelings that Beau could bring on with just a few simple words. Or a meaningful look. Sometimes a text. This was what it was like to fall hard for someone—you willingly, giddily ceded your control to them. Marlowe said I had heart eyes 24/7 now.
It had been almost two weeks since Beau and I officially became a couple. I was still scared, because he was going to be part of our baby’s life. But the more time I spent sitting with my feelings and really thinking about them, the more I came to realize that was actually a good thing.
I’d chosen Beau as my baby’s father because of how great he was on paper, but I’d since found out he was also amazing in all the intangible ways you can’t discover until you truly know someone.
He loved his family and his teammates. He jumped in to help when someone needed it. Unless he was assembling furniture, he was easygoing and always had a smile.
Some of the fears and feelings I’d confronted since meeting Beau weren’t pleasant, but there had also been joy, longing, and hope. For so long, I’d tried to protect myself against feeling anything. That had led to a lonely life, though, and I didn’t want to force my own anxieties on my child.
“My boss is pretty amazing,” I said as Beau walked over to me, his eyes swimming with hunger. “She’d be okay with a break.”
“Does your boss look as sexy as you do in glasses?”
I straightened my dark-framed glasses and pretended to consider his question. “Oddly, she looks almost exactly like I do in glasses.”
He turned my desk chair so I was facing him, putting a hand on each chair arm and leaning down to kiss me softly.
“My library books are all overdue,” he murmured against my lips. “And I’ve bent the corners of the pages on all of them.”
“Oh, that will not do,” I said, playing along. “You’ve disappointed your librarian, Mr. Fox. What am I going to go with you?”
His mouth found mine again, the kiss full of pent-up sexual energy. No matter how many times we had sex in every position that accommodated my belly, it was never enough.
“I’m willing to work off my transgressions,” he said in a low tone. “Maybe”
Our moment of bliss was interrupted by a knock at the door. Beau sighed.
“Marlowe has the worst timing. Let’s pretend we’re not here. Where were we?”
“I can’t pretend to not be here, silly. She knows I work from home and our cars are in the parking lot.”
He furrowed his brow and made a growly sound. “She’ll get the hint and assume we’re in bed. And we will be in about thirty seconds.”
I moaned softly as he kissed my neck, which was my weakness. The knock sounded again, but this time it was longer and louder.
“Hey, that’s not Marlowe’s knock,” I said. “And she wouldn’t come over while she thinks I’m working, anyway.”
He groaned. “Okay, okay. The cockblocker wins.”
I laughed as he moved away from my chair and I stood up. “Hey, you do realize this is probably a delivery or something and we can carry on in like one minute, right?”
