He must have noticed it because he ordered, “Enough about me. What’s new with you?”
I hadn’t talked to him in a few weeks. He was overseas with supermodels, apparently.
Giving in to his demands, I replied, “I’m still looking for a job.”
For some reason, it made me think about how easily it was for everyone else to march in line with what he ordered.
“You want to be my lawyer?”
“How often do you need one?”
“Enough to have three on the payroll.”
“Hmm…” I lifted my finger to my lip. “You’re not wealthy unless someone tries to sue you every day.”
“Yeah, something like that.”
I hated feeling like I didn’t know this part of him. Instead of lingering on those emotions, I shoved them away and showered. Never expecting or predicting what would come later that night.
Not for one damn second.
Ethan
I went to the LA office most of the day and then had dinner with some business prospects. I thought about Livvy the entire time. There was something in her eyes from that morning that I couldn’t forget. It was almost as if she didn’t recognize me anymore, which made no sense. She was the only person in the world who knew me.
When I returned to her apartment, I needed to tell her what I came to say. Now after all these years, maybe it was the time to explore what we started that summer before college. Last I heard, she wasn’t with Beau anymore.
I walked inside her place, using the key she gave me freshman year. The lights were off, and I turned on the one in the hallway.
“Livvy,” I hollered to no avail. Next, I knocked on her bedroom door. “Livvy.” Since there was no answer, I opened it.
And immediately came face-to-face with a topless Livvy.
She loudly gasped, spinning around to face me with her arms over her chest.
I instantly smiled, gripping the door handle. Cocking my head to the side, I took in her gorgeous body that looked better than I remembered.
My girl.
“Ethan! Oh my God! Turn around!”
I grinned. “It’s nothing I haven’t seen before.”
She shook off my remark. “Were you raised in a barn? Shut the door.”
“You don’t have to ask me twice.” I shut the door, leaning my back against it with my arms crossed over my chest.
“I meant get out,” she scolded.
“But I thought we could have a slumber party.”
“Can you at least shut your eyes so I can continue getting dressed?”
I lay on her bed, looking up at the ceiling for a few seconds before tossing my arm over my eyes to allow her to change. I didn’t know how long I lay there until I felt the bed dip beside me.
She wore white cotton shorts with a tight white tank top. Her red hair had gotten long again, falling all the way down to her waist. This was the first time I’d seen it grown out this long since before she left for college.
Grabbing the ends, I coaxed, “Your hair is long.”
I couldn’t help but recall why she cut it in the first place.
“I cut it because I was tired of looking in the mirror at the girl who’s your best friend. I’m just trying to find my own identity.”
Her bright green eyes still had the power to bring me to my knees with a simple look. She wasn’t wearing any makeup, but she never needed it. She was always naturally breathtaking. The women I hooked up with didn’t even come close to her beauty.
Something in her gaze told me she wanted to say so much. Our summer still lurked right around the corner like a shadow I could never get away from it. However, I never really tried to either. I chose to have it stay there in case we ever got a second chance at being together.
She caressed my cheek with the knuckles of her delicate fingers like she knew what I felt, what I thought, what I wanted. I leaned into her hand, and it fell onto the back of the headboard. I used it as a pillow as her other hand played with my hair, pulling the longer pieces away from my face.
My face turned into the palm of her hand, and I softly kissed it before I slowly placed tender kisses up her arm, brushing my lips back and forth to enjoy the feel of her skin against my mouth.
She was so soft.
So warm.
It had been so fucking long.
Eight years felt like a lifetime ago.
Except my lock and key necklace was always on her neck.
She lightly gasped, and once I made it to her shoulder, I slid her hair to the other side of her neck, never stopping my caresses on her skin. I could feel my effect on her, and she hadn’t stopped me.
“Ethan,” she lightly stirred, her body tensing.
My heart sped up. “What?” I was getting closer to her neck.
