I do the only thing I can do and follow quickly after him. I do, of course, have to rush to my table to grab my purse, which Jasmine is already holding out for me.
“He said yes!” I exclaim.
“Go, go!” She waves me on, raising a toast with Taylor as I rush away in pursuit of my date.
He’s already outside, standing in front of some kind of black luxury car that looks like Elon Musk would be chauffeured around in it. A man in a black suit steps out from the driver’s side and comes around to open the back door for him.
Marlon slides in like he’s completely accustomed to this.
“Rain?” he calls out from within. “We doing this or not?”
His voice shocks me. I realize I’ve been staring, and I trot carefully across the sidewalk to the car. I hear murmurs from beside me and glance over to see everyone in the line waiting to get into the club–especially the girls–staring at me as I place my foot inside.
Either this guy or this car are a big deal.
Or both.
Once I’m in, Marlon presses a button beside him, and the door automatically closes and all the noise of the night is instantly gone, leaving us alone together in the back.
He presses another button and says, “She’s in, let’s go.”
I realize he’s speaking to the driver who’s up front, separated from us by a divider like you’d find in a limousine.
The car starts moving, and Marlon begins checking me out once more. I can practically feel a physical sensation as he drags his gaze up my legs, then to my waist, then unabashedly over my breasts before settling on my eyes.
“You seriously do not know what you’re getting yourself into, Rain.”
Part of me–a major part of me–thinks he’s right. But another part of me can’t even believe I even ended up in this car with him. And I am not about to back down now.
“I think you may be talking about yourself there, Marlon,” I counter.
He leans in quickly, slips a hand up my dress, and grabs my inner thigh with his strong fingers, causing me to gasp.
“Just remember, Rain. No falling in love.”

Three years ago, Iris Turner’s life fell apart when her father left, destroying her family along with her dreams of becoming a doctor. Now, on her 18th birthday, Iris is considering a questionable career – one that will bring her and her alcoholic mother the money they desperately need – but one she’s not sure she’s ready for.
That’s when Jameson Gray, the older boy who lived next door and used to look out for her and vanished without a trace when she needed him most, shows up again. But he’s no longer the boy he used to be. He’s a man now, and he’s offered to provide for Iris.
But years of taking care of herself and not trusting anyone, especially men, has Iris suspicious of this ghost from her past. But Jameson is assertive, strong, and stubborn in his intent, and the way he’s blossomed into a ruggedly handsome man doesn’t hurt either. And Iris quickly finds herself wondering if there is a reason this man showed up at this critical time in her life.

His name is Bain Warner, ex-enforcer for the Romano crime family. They call him the “Movie Star Murderer” on account of his incredible good looks that had women everywhere swooning when he was sent to prison five years ago after being convicted of killing seventeen men, and those were just the ones they could prove. Six months ago, his first letter arrived at my home.
At first I was terrified. A dangerous killer wanting to speak to me? I threw out the letters, but that didn’t stop him. He sent more. Then upped the ante and invited me to the prison for a conjugal visit, just him and me alone in a room, completely unsupervised for an hour. I may have lost my mind, because I’m actually considering it. And the worst part? I was part of the legal team that led to his conviction five years ago.

RAIN
As it turns out, Marlon lives in a penthouse in a building with a doorman and a code for the elevator. And why wouldn’t he?
He has a suit that looks like it costs what I make in a month, an incredible car that I’ve never even heard of–which is valeted to an underground parking garage when we arrive–and the attitude and arrogance of a man who owns a company.
Or several.
He’s greeted by smiles and hat tips by no less than three men when we arrive.
“Good evening, Mr. Carnell,” they all say.
He acknowledges them back, but not as though they are his equals. He doesn’t take me by the hand as though I’m his date but simply expects me to follow him through the lobby to the elevator, where he uses a gold keycard to get us moving.
