Megan watched them with a smug grin. She grabbed Riley’s hand and led her to the living room. “Would you like a glass of wine?”
“Love one. Thank you.”
“Be right back.” Megan went into her kitchen and returned with one glass of wine for Riley and a bottled water for herself.
Riley raised a brow. “You’re not going to have a drink with me?”
“I can’t in my condition.” Megan waited for it to sink in and then she grinned.
Riley gasped. “Oh my God, that’s fantastic!” She hugged her friend. “I’m so happy for you. I bet Jackson is thrilled.”
“He is. He’s been walking around with his chest puffed out like he’s the first man to impregnate a woman.”
“Cut the guy some slack. Guys are different about these things. I’m so happy for you two. You’re going to be a mommy. How does that feel?”
“It’s exciting and scary at the same time. I’m going to be responsible for another human being’s life. I could possibly end up raising the future president of the United State or a serial killer.”
“Uh, there’s gotta be a happy medium in there somewhere.”
“I’m sure.” Megan grinned sheepishly. “You know how I think in extremes sometimes.”
”So I want to hear about your honeymoon, everything you saw and did—well not everything,” she laughed.
Megan waved her hand dismissively. “That can come later. I want to hear about you and Ethan. You two were so closed mouthed about it at the wedding but you were all over each other at the reception. So spill it.”
Riley grinned feeling like a schoolgirl talking about her first crush. “Well there’s really nothing much to say. Ethan and I were seeing each other shortly after the engagement party and we decided to give it another try.”
“I’m sure there’s more to it than that.”
There was but Riley had remembered her vow about not over sharing information to people outside of her marriage. As much as she loved Megan it pertained to her as well. Some things were meant to be kept private. “Well, Ethan and I both made a lot of mistakes the first time around but it didn’t kill the love we still have for each other. We love each other and we want to be together. We’re going to Maui next month to get married on the beach, just the two of us.”
“That sounds so romantic. I’m so glad the two of you are back together. I was heartbroken when you and Ethan split up, especially when I knew how crazy you guys still were about each other. Mom and Dad are happy. You know how much they love you and hopefully, the two you will have some news on the baby front. I’d love it if our children were close in age so we can raise them together.”
“We’d love that. Ethan and I do want children right away. A child will never replace the one we lost but we’re very excited about kids.”
“That’s awesome. So, how did your mom and sisters take it?”
Riley winced. That was still a sore point for her. “Raine surprisingly hasn’t had a whole lot to say about it although we haven’t really talked too much lately beyond me visiting the kids. Rachel is cool about it. But Mom is not really speaking to me right now.”
Megan clasped her hands in hers. “Oh Riley, I’m so sorry.”
It hurt when her mother had basically called her a fool and told her not to come around until she “got some sense” but Riley realized she couldn’t live her life according to her mother’s wishes. That would lead to a miserable existence. At the end of the day, she was the one in charge of her own happiness not anyone else and she was happy with Ethan. She hoped her mother would eventually come around but Riley wouldn’t change her mind nor let her mind be poisoned again.
“It’s okay. I’m disappointed she couldn’t be more supportive of my choices, but hopefully she’d come around.”
Megan leaned over to give her a hug. “I’m sure she will. Your mom is a good woman, she just has a strong opinion about men.”
Riley snorted. “That’s a nice way of putting it.”
They chatted about Megan’s honeymoon and some of the plans Riley and Ethan had to decorate their house before they were joined by Ethan and Jackson.
Ethan plopped down on the sofa next to her and put his arm around Riley’s shoulders. “Hey, kitten.” He kissed her temple.
She leaned into him, happier than she’d ever been. Life was good and she knew without a doubt this time around Riley would settle for nothing less than forever.
