“Ethan was the one who walked out on me. I’d say he did fairly well for himself. He’s made partner at his firm and one of the top lawyers on the East Coast.”
“Despite what you think, my brother does have feelings. Lest you forget, you were the one who served him papers.”
“When he left me that pretty much signaled the end of our marriage. The paperwork was just a formality. Look, can we just drop the subject please. We were having a great day and I don’t want to ruin it by talking about your brother.”
Megan sighed. “Fine, but I’d like to say one more thing and I promise I’ll drop the subject.”
“Do you really have to?”
“I think it needs to be said.”
“Okay, go ahead.”
“Ethan was crushed when your marriage ended. I mean he was in bad shape. There are some things I can’t say but you two need to talk things out if not to get back together then just to be able really move on with your lives. Whatever it is that’s going on with you currently is dandy now but if you two don’t hash out what went wrong the first time around this is going to blow up in your faces. And another thing, Ethan wasn’t the only one to blame for problems in your marriage Riley. He wasn’t perfect and neither were you.”
Riley folded her arms over her chest not liking the direction this conversation was taking. “Really? How so?”
“You were so insecure and always accusing him of cheating when he wasn’t. And you let your mom and Raine drive a wedge between the two you. I hate to speak ill about your family but those two are more sour than a basket of lemons. And then the bab—”
“That’s enough. You’ve said your piece.”
Megan opened her mouth but quickly closed it. She nodded her head.
Riley hated seeing Megan look so glum but hearing an outsider’s observation of her marriage made Riley rehash memories she wanted to keep stored away. Rachel had told her much of the same but Riley hadn’t wanted to deal with it then either.
She reached across the table and took Megan’s hand. “Sweetheart, let’s not argue okay. This is supposed to be a day of fun and shopping, so how about we get of here and hit up some more stores.”
“Sure, I’d like that.”
Things remained tense for a while as they continued shopping but eventually they were laughing and having a good time again. But Megan’s words remained in the back of her head for the rest of the day. What was it that Megan didn’t tell her about Ethan?
Ethan had waited a couple days before calling Riley. He wanted to give her some time to let things sink in. But he didn’t want to leave it too long to give her enough time to back out of their deal. He half expected her to not answer the phone and was pleasantly surprised when Riley answered on the second call.
“Ethan,” she answered, her voice full of resignation.
“It’s great to hear your voice again too, kitten.”
“I’m sure there’s a reason why you’re calling. What do you want?”
“The answer will always be the same. You.”
She paused for a moment before responding. “I’m being serious Ethan. “Why are you calling?”
“Because I want to see you.”
“The other night was—”
“I’m going to cut you off there before you say it. It wasn’t a mistake especially when we both enjoyed it. You participated as well. Are you honestly going to tell me you didn’t enjoy it?”
“Of course, I did but that isn’t the point. We’re going down a path that will only lead to painful memories just like the first time.”
“Riley this time around, the only pain you’ll experiences is when I spank your ass as I’m stamping my name into your pussy, over and over again. And you know what? You’re going to like that kind of pain.”
“You’re so nasty.”
“And you love it. I want to see you.”
“Now? It’s ten o’ clock at night and I have to go to work in the morning.”
“As much as I’d love to see you right now and have your legs wrapped around me as you scream my name, I wanted to invite you to dinner.”
“I don’t think—”
“That it’s a good idea? Yes, yes, I’ve heard that line before. You’re starting to sound like a broken record, kitten. Remember, we have to get along for Megan’s sake. The wedding is four months away which means we should be spending more time together. That way when it rolls around we’ll be getting along famously.”
“This plan of yours sounds so stupid.”
Ethan grinned. Even though she seemed dismissive he could tell by her hesitancy whenever she answered that she did want to give in to his requests. “Was it so stupid when you were screaming my name? Come over to my place tomorrow if you don’t have any plans. Just dinner if that’s all you want. Promise.”
