“You should be with him. He’s the one who is actually injured.”
The only thing she was suffering from was acute embarrassment.
“Eh, I spend way too much time with him as it is. Wasn’t lying when I said you smell better.”
“Thanks,” she said dryly. “Glad I smell better than a man who works outside with animals all day.”
Tanner slipped an arm around her neck and led her back to reception.
“Tell me this, honey. How come you can give me as good as you get and put me in my place, but the second you spot my brother, you can’t remember how to walk?”
Shit.
She really didn’t know how to answer him. Because she couldn’t tell him the truth. That she became a bumbling idiot because she liked his brother.
Nope. Not happening.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Excuse me, I need to get to work.”
Internally, she groaned. Like that hadn’t made it obvious she had something to hide.
Tanner shot her a knowing look but stepped away. “Sure thing, darlin’. You get back to work. I’ll just wait over here.”
She did her best to ignore him as other patients came in and she took a few phone calls.
Then she heard his voice.
She wasn’t going to look. She was not. But she couldn’t help but glance up, and that’s when she saw Tanner watching her closely.
Shoot. Now, if she didn’t look at Raid, it would be obvious that she was purposefully not looking.
This was so ridiculous.
But when she turned, she really wished she hadn’t. Because Simone, a gorgeous tall woman with dark blonde hair, was pressing against him, smiling.
Simone had been working as the clinic’s nurse for the last month. Hannah didn’t dislike the other woman, but she was pretty sure they weren’t going to become best buds. Simone lived in Freestown and traveled to Haven each day. Hannah knew that Doc Harper and Jenna would have preferred to hire someone local, but there hadn’t been anyone qualified.
That left them with Simone. Who flirted with anyone with a dick under the age of sixty.
So Hannah really shouldn’t get jealous that she was flirting with Raid. Or that he was staring down at her with a grin on his face.
Nope. Not. Jealous.
“Raid, brother, you ready or what?” Tanner asked, sounding surprisingly grouchy.
She glanced over at him in surprise.
“Yeah, I’m coming.” Raid’s gaze turned to Hannah.
She tried her best to act normal. Well, what she thought was normal. She also wasn’t going to risk getting out of this chair. No way did she want a repeat of earlier.
Concern filled Raid’s face. “Hannah, are you all right?”
“What is it? Did something happen?” Simone asked, eyes wide.
Hannah narrowed her gaze. Did she really think anyone was buying that fake concern?
Or maybe you’re just being a bit sensitive because you don’t like the way she’s pressed up against Raid.
“She fell over,” Raid explained, taking a step toward her.
“Oh, she’s just clumsy.” Simone ran her hand through the air dismissively.
What? She was not! Well, only when Raid was around.
“Yeah, I’ve noticed that.” Raid smiled at her.
But Hannah was too embarrassed to smile back.
“She seems fine now.” Simone sent her a strange look. “Aren’t you, Hannah?”
“Yep. All good. So, did Jenna patch you up?”
Raid gave her a thorough look, but then a smile crossed his face. “Yep. She said I’m in prime condition.” He flexed his good arm.
Hannah pretended to feel faint, waving her hand in front of her face. “Oh my. I feel faint.”
“Because of my greatness?”
“Because your ego is stealing all the air in the room.”
He barked out a laugh, and she smiled, feeling something inside her ease at the sound. Then Simone moved closer to him.
“Raid, you should really go home and rest. Hannah can get you all sorted. Then I’m sure she has work to do.”
Wow. Those were some sharp daggers she was sending Hannah’s way.
“Sure, don’t want to hold Hannah up. You got everything you need, darlin’?” he asked.
“Considering you’re in here so often, I basically have your details memorized,” she said dryly. “I’m beginning to think you’re hurting yourself on purpose just so you get to come see me.”
Lord, she wished.
But Raid just burst into laughter.
Ouch. That hurt.
“Right, darlin’. Hurting myself just to see you. That would be a kind of stalker-level obsession, wouldn’t it?”
That’s what she wanted.
Stalker-level obsession.
Too bad no one was ever going to be into her that much. Let alone gorgeous, sexy Raid Malone.
“Do you need a follow-up appointment?” she asked stiffly.
He gave her a surprised look. Crap. Had she revealed too much?
“Just to get the stitches out, darlin’,” he replied, watching her closely.
Shit. Shit.
She could never let him see how much she wanted him.
“That appointment will be with me,” Simone said. “I’ll take good care of you, Raid.”
Gag.
But Raid just stared down at the other woman with a smile. “I’m sure you will, darlin’.”
