Giggling.

I fucking loved it.

“Well?” I waited impatiently.

“Well what?” she asked.

“What about you?”

I knew she loved me. She knew she loved me. Hell, the entire town of Kilgore and Hostel knew we loved each other.

“I guess I love you, too.” She paused. “You dirty old man.”

I pinched her ass, causing her to shriek.

“Hey, not nice!” she said.

“When,” I dropped back down to whisper my words against her ear. “have I ever claimed to be a nice person?”

When I leaned back, I found her eyes were shuttered once again.

Shaking my head, I pulled away and took her with me until we were both leaning up on the bed.

The bed that was a huge mess, and sheets that would definitely need to be washed before we went to sleep in them.

“Tell me like you mean it,” I ordered her, lightly tugging her hair.

“You’re the window to my wall,” she said with a growing smile.

I studied the ceiling.

“Yeah?” I asked in confusion.

“I’m the sweat that drips down your single ball.”

I blinked.

“Skeet skeet.”

I burst out laughing, then I reached for the pillow and smacked her with it.

She dramatically fell over clutching the pillow to her breasts.

“You weren’t but a baby when that song came out,” I grumbled as I stood up and headed to the bathroom.

“Hey!” she yelled as she followed me. “I was little, but that was a very impressionable time in my life.”

I turned around, caught her by the hips, and walked with her into the shower that I just turned on.

She shrieked as the cold water met her back, but her nipples pebbled nicely.

“Shut up,” I ordered. “You make me feel like a pervy old man every time you remind me how old you aren’t.”

I let her slip down my body until both feet rested on the tile of my bathroom floor.

“Well,” she replied. “It could be worse.”

“I’m not sure how your age could be any worse at this point,” I admitted.

“I could be pregnant.”

I stared as my heart started to pound.

“You’re on birth control,” I said to her, somewhat desperately.

She smacked me.

“I know that,” she said. “But what I’m saying is I could be pregnant, and people could be thinking you got your daughter pregnant.”

I placed my hand over her face and pushed her head back into the showerhead spray. “Just stop talking. I don’t think my heart can live through your scenarios.”

Janie was too busy laughing to reply.

Chapter 18

I think today is the day…that I burn this motherfucker to the ground.

-Text from Janie to Rafe

Janie

Tired, sore in the best of ways, and wide awake, I lay in bed next to Rafe listening to him breathe.

My dogs were snoring—on the floor at his side of the bed—and it seemed like I was the only one still not finding sleep.

I looked over at the phone on the nightstand. His. It stayed slightly illuminated, always displaying the time. I winced when I saw the time. 0333. Three freakin’ thirty in the morning.

Ouch.

After waiting for the sheets to be washed, and then dried, we’d both fallen into bed with exhaustion.

Only, I didn’t fell asleep like he did.

It was a good thing I worked from home because when I did finally get up in the morning I wouldn’t be a very good functioning member of society.

But, as three-thirty moved to four-thirty, and all I had done was rethink the entire night through—I realized I might as well be practical.

Getting up carefully and quietly as possible, I made my way out of the bedroom and closed the door behind me. Once in the living room, I picked up Rafe’s sweatpants from the laundry basket on the floor and slipped them on over my legs. I had to even untie the string because they wouldn’t fit otherwise. They were very long, though, bunching up around my feet to about mid-calf.

Telling myself not to think about my curvy self—and when I say curvy I meant very curvy. It was more than obvious I enjoyed tacos a little too much—I took a seat on the couch and reached for my computer. Which was next to Rafe’s computer.

I smiled when I saw the difference between the two. Where my computer was silver and covered in a neon yellow skin with stickers over every available inch, Rafe’s was boring and plain. The only embellishment on it whatsoever was the Apple symbol in the middle. And he didn’t even put that there—Apple did.

Grinning to myself, I signed into my computer and immediately groaned. It was running slow again. Which irritated me.

I kept this bad boy in tip-top shape. It shouldn’t be running slow.

Which got me curious. Why was it running slow?

An hour later I’d torn my computer apart—not literally, but cyberly—and was no closer to figuring out why.

The last thing I could try needed to be done through someone else’s computer.

I looked over to see Rafe’s just sitting there, and grinned.
