“What are we going to do?” I grinned.
She flushed. “You already told me you didn’t want to get into it completely. You wanted me to stay out of sight from Layton. Which I will. But there’s no reason I can’t stay behind the scenes. Keep doing what I’m doing…”
I immediately shook my head. “I’d agree with you if I didn’t know Layton. You’re good, I’ll give you that. But Layton will have someone just as good.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Is whatever he’s doing really bad?”
I pursued my lips. “I don’t know.”
I had a lot of theories, but none of them were substantiated.
“What do you suspect?” She caught on to my hesitation.
I sighed. “I suspect, based on Dante’s thing, that he’s involved in the military thefts. I was close to something before my accident. Ever since, I’ve been an outsider. They discuss nothing around me. Even Elspeth wasn’t helping me anymore. Which is why I’m not too upset about losing that in.”
She sighed. “You’ll tell me if you need help?”
I leaned over in the bed and pulled her toward me. “You will be the first to know.”
And as she fell asleep in my arms, I knew that I’d do everything in my power not to need her. I had a feeling that this was about to go very, very bad.
Chapter 16
I’m not a glass half-full kind of person. I’m more of a ‘where the fuck did I put my glass’ kind of person.
-Janie’s secret thoughts
Janie
The first hurdle was over.
Rafe remembered.
Everything.
It hurt, and it healed all at the same time.
I wanted him to remember me. I didn’t like how it felt when he didn’t.
Like what we’d shared had all been a lie.
And now that I knew that what he had with Elspeth was also fake, well that was just the incentive I needed.
I had to talk to my dad.
Which was why I was up at five thirty in the morning with my rifle in hand, and my dogs at my feet, waiting beside his truck for him to come outside.
He did moments later, stopping a few feet outside of his front door to stare at me.
“You’re up early.”
I shrugged.
I wasn’t a morning person.
I especially wasn’t a morning person when I spent the majority of the previous day not sleeping. And when I say, ‘not sleeping,’ I mean I did some intense cardio with very little rest in between sessions.
And Rafe, my broodingly sexy man, acted like this was just a walk in the park for him.
He’d been up over an hour and a half ago and had escorted me to my front gate before the sun even came up. He’d even had to go as far as to carry me out since I couldn’t seem to keep my eyes open.
After letting my dogs out of Kayla’s house, I walked to my own and downed two cups of black coffee before I even began to feel remotely human.
Which led to now.
“I’m up early,” I agreed. “I wanted to come with you.”
Dad didn’t even blink an eye at me coming with him.
I’d done it a lot when we were younger. Not so much lately seeing as I’d learned the value of sleeping in.
He walked around his truck and opened my door for me. Before I could hop in, though, my dogs leaped and made their way to the back seat where they sat down nicely.
“At least they are considerate,” Dad muttered.
I agreed.
My dogs might be a pain in the ass sometimes, but they were considerate. They were also sweet, and I loved them. Rafe loved them, too, unlike Tegan.
“Why didn’t you tell me that you had a problem with Tegan?” I questioned, looking at my father.
He gestured to the truck, and I got inside.
He slammed it closed and didn’t answer me until we were well on our way.
“Who am I to question who my daughter marries?” he asked.
I gave him a look.
“My prom date you decided needed a lesson in putting on a condom. You made him practice it on a banana five times before you let him out of the house. The moment we got to prom, he left me and didn’t return until five minutes before eleven. He picked me up, dropped me off, and then left to go out and party with people who he knew weren’t going to have him killed later on for hurting them,” I drawled.
My dad’s mouth quirked up. “The kid was a wiener.”
I had no doubts about that.
I hadn’t liked him, and honestly, he was just a boy who was taking me on a date to the prom.
Personally, I would have much preferred it if Rafe took me, but it would’ve looked quite odd if that had happened.
Not to mention that my dad would have most certainly put a stop to that.
Now…well, I wanted to know what it was that was keeping him from telling me everything about Tegan.
