“I hope you have mourned your losses well. I put in extra special work to exterminate your bloodlines. You see the difference between doing and trying.

“I guess I was more effective because I did the work myself. I like to get shit done. I see the suits and shoes I sent for you all fit perfectly. Uri?”

“Done,” he replies as all four of my executioners finish the job I started.

EPILOGUE

Work to Do

Michael

Ten years later …

“I am thirteen, not three. I understand what you mean, Sim,” Sammy says in exasperation.

I grin. Listening to these two argue is always amusing. They are both brilliant and love to challenge each other. Neither likes to be wrong.

Many times, neither is; they’re just saying the same thing differently. Symphony is usually the first to give in because she knows she’s not wrong and being right is more rewarding for her than winning the fight.

“If you understand, then do as I say,” Sim snaps.

She hasn’t been as patient with Sammy and his training today. She’s been snapping at him more than anything. That’s not like her at all.

I can see why Sammy seems to be flustered. “Mommy,” Artemis, our son, squeals in my arms.

“Not now, Artemis, Mommy is working,” Sim huffs.

I lift a brow. Okay, so she’s going to be testy with everyone today. Maybe we should go for a snack.

“Ugh, you were nicer the first time you were pregnant. I will stop coming to visit you if this is how you are going to behave.” Sammy scowls at Sim.

I turn to look at my son in my arms and knit my brows. I then turn to look at Sim as she stands with the same expression. Artemis has just turned four.

We weren’t planning to have another baby. I close the distance to stand next to my wife. She takes our son from my arms and hugs him tightly to her chest.

She worried her entire pregnancy about the health of our son. I can already see the worry etching into her face. I glance at Sammy.

His eyes are distant for a minute. Then he nods his head and focuses on me. A little grin forms in the corner of his lips.

“Non mi alzerò da solo. Sarà con tutta la mia famiglia e i miei amici. I re continueranno, ma anche le regine. Andiamo. Abbiamo del lavoro da fare,” he says and turns to walk away.

I kiss my wife passionately. It looks like we’ll be having a girl. Marrying this woman was one of the best decisions of my life.
