“You were getting under my skin,” he said.

She stopped. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

“You want me to prove it to you. I broke up with you because you were getting too close, and I was … I wasn’t used to the feelings you were inspiring.”

“You’re talking horseshit!” She glared at him. “Do you really expect me to believe that?”

“I’m not talking horseshit!”

“Hunter, in all the years I’ve known you, and I know that’s not actually many in the scheme of things, you don’t strike me as a guy who runs away from stuff. You’re the kind of guy who runs toward it.”

“I’ve never felt the way I have with you.”

Harlow shook her head. “I don’t believe you.”

“What do I need to do to show you?” Hunter asked.

“Prove it! Give me a reason why I should.”

“My word is not enough?”

“Your word once told me that you were done and I wasn’t good enough for you, so you tell me. Which one is the truth, and why should I believe one over the other?”

****

“You still don’t believe him?” Hailey asked.

Harlow finished putting the new range of concealers on the shelf. They had a new delivery of recent products on the market, and she loved all the packages. They were perfect. This was one area of the job she did also like. Another area she liked that she hadn’t told anyone about, was applying the makeup.

When she was alone in her room, she found herself at her vanity table, attempting some of the makeup tutorials she saw online. The first attempt was a mess, but now she was getting used to the feelings of the brushes and the products on her face. She always started with a small amount of product.

“No, I don’t.”

“You know, he’s still out there,” Hailey said.

This had become part of Hunter’s job description it would seem. She didn’t know if it meant the threat of the Twisted Bastards MC was stronger now, but he was always outside, lurking. He had even offered to drive her home. Hailey currently had been available to drive her home. Even though she had been tempted to climb on the back of his bike, she held herself back.

“Do you think he’s making clients uneasy?” Harlow asked.

“Nah, if anything I think it’s giving them something pretty to look at.”

Harlow smiled, she couldn’t help it. Hunter was a handsome man, and she had seen the whole package as well, completely naked, and he was a dream.

She didn’t say anything, as she didn’t want to evoke jealousy.

“Why don’t you go outside and offer him a cup of coffee or a tea? It’s freezing out.”

“I’m not going outside into the cold.”

“Harlow, you cannot be so cold and heartless.”

“If you’re so worried, why don’t you go and ask him?” Harlow asked.

Hailey smiled and winked at her. “Simple, I’m the boss, and I know deep down in that cold, heartless heart of yours, there is in fact a woman who cares a lot, and is just pretending to hate him. You’d hate it if he froze to death.”

“He’s not going to freeze to death.” She finished unpacking the box and broke it down so it could go around the back with the rest of the recycling.

Harlow didn’t want to play these games with Hunter. He broke her heart, and just because he was saying the things she wanted to hear, it didn’t for a second mean she believed any of them. Hunter knew how to walk the walk and talk the talk. For all she knew, he could just be missing the regular fuck they enjoyed.

Wrapping a jacket around her shoulders to ward off the cold, she made her way across the road to where Hunter stood.

“What are you going?” Harlow asked.

“Keeping an eye on you.”

She sighed. “Does this have to do with my brother? Has George put you up to it?”

“George hasn’t put me up to anything.”

“So, this has nothing to do with the Twisted Bastards MC?” she asked.

“What do you know about the Twisted?” Hunter asked.

She rolled her eyes. “The same as you. They’re your enemies, and seeing as the new leader enjoyed some time choking me, that’s pretty much all I know.”

Hunter seemed to visibly relax.

“I think you need to be careful.”

“Of what?”

“Of your boss.”

“Hailey?” She burst out laughing and shook her head. “You’re wrong about her. She is completely harmless.”

“What do you know about her?” Hunter asked.

“Enough.”

“Like what?”

“She is kind, sweet, and talkative. She is amazing at beauty, and she’s a dream. Clients love her, and she has a secret Lover Boy.” The last one wasn’t supposed to drop out, but she found the moment she started to speak, words just kept coming.

“A secret Lover Boy? She arrives just as the threat of the Twisted Bastards MC start. You noticed how they kept her inside the bar while the prez was choking you? She employs you, and according to Big Dick, other than Ava, you never had a steady job.”
