“Doesn’t mean a woman can’t use an excuse to get all pretty.” Hailey winked at her.

She wanted to contradict her, but decided against it. If Hailey wanted to dress, Harlow was not going to stop her. Seeing as her car was totaled in the accident, Hailey drove them back to town. It was a Saturday night, and it was a miracle they found a parking space. The diner was busy, but when they stepped inside, she spotted a small table for them. She had also noticed that several of the Hell’s Bastards MC were present. Harlow ignored them as they took their seats.

“I am starving. What’s good here?” Hailey asked.

“The fries are good. So is the salad.” She looked up. “I’m vegan, remember, kind of limits a lot of stuff. I do believe the burgers are great. Everything is good. Don’t worry about what you order.”

“Crap, I totally forgot about you being vegan.”

Harlow smiled.

“Do you want to go and eat somewhere else?”

She shook her head. “Nah, I’m good. This is all fine. Trust me.”

“But I feel so bad.” Hailey winced.

“This is good food.” Harlow winked at her.

The waitress came over, the same one who gave Hunter her number. The same man who was in the corner with several of his buddies. She didn’t know if he even noticed she was there or not. Either way, she wasn’t going to be rude to the woman. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was screwing this woman now. Cutting off those thoughts, she forced a smile to her face and ordered her usual. Hailey ordered a burger and fries with a salad on the side.

“I feel so bad. Are you sure you don’t want to go somewhere else?” Hailey asked.

“Nah, I’m good.” She kept a smile on her face, even though it sounded like the bikers were trying to be overheard by everyone. It was getting harder to ignore them.

She had no idea what to say to Hailey to try and distract the two of them. Hailey kept looking toward the bikers.

“Don’t worry about them,” Harlow said. “They’re harmless.”

Hailey laughed, but it wasn’t a natural one. “I find that hard to believe. Don’t they all have a reputation for being, you know, violent?”

“That is all true, but I do know these guys and they are only violent to those that betray them. They’re good men and trust me, you would be safe, unless of course one of them wants you.”

“I’ll be perfectly fine then.”

Harlow frowned as she looked at Hailey. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t have to worry about men wanting me. I never have anyone chasing me or … wanting to date me. I’ll be fine.”

She wanted to talk more to Hailey, but the waitress brought their food over.

“Hailey, you do know you’re gorgeous, right?”

“No, I’m not. I might be pretty, but trust me, that’s the makeup. Everything else, I just don’t attract men, or friends, or much of anything.” Hailey smiled. “It’s one of the reasons my parents weren’t too keen on the idea of setting me up in business. They didn’t think I was going to be able to make it work. So far, so good.”

Harlow didn’t know what to say to her.

Hailey was a sweet person. So kind. For the last couple of weeks, Harlow had been so absorbed with what she’d been going through, she hadn’t considered what Hailey might be dealing with.

In fact, there was a lot she didn’t know about her. The woman talked a lot more, even rivaling her when she didn’t have all the shit going on inside her head.

Hailey moaned after taking a large bite of her burger. “Holy crap, this is so good.” She took another bite.

Seeing the moment had passed, Harlow promised herself she would get to know her best friend a lot more.

She took a bite of her fry and then another one. Cutting up her salad, she mixed it around with her fries, loving the taste with avocado. It was one of the best things she had put in her mouth.

“This is so good!” Hailey said, finishing the last of her burger. “I think I’m done with frozen pizza.”

Harlow laughed.

“What do you say we have some cheesecake and ice cream?” Harlow asked.

“I can’t,” Hailey groaned.

“You get the dessert. I’ll have an extra cup of coffee, but I’ll be back in a minute. I just need to use the bathroom.” She got to her feet and placed a hand on Hailey’s shoulder before heading into the bathroom.

There was no one there. Going to the sinks, Harlow gripped the edge and took a deep breath. “It’s fine. It’s fine,” she whispered to herself. Stepping into the stall, she pressed her face against her hands, trying to keep it together. After using the toilet, she flushed and then stepped out of the stall, only to stop when she caught sight of Hunter in the bathroom. “This is the ladies’ room.”
