“Just the way you like it.”

Frank nodded his head.

Leah rolled her eyes and sat down. Her hot chocolate was waiting for her, and she took a sip. It was delicious. She hoped Cameron’s café continued to thrive. The woman was so sweet and kind. She deserved it.

“Where’s the cinnamon bun?” Leah asked.

As if like magic, that was when Cameron appeared. She carried a tray, and there was a smile to her lips. Leah saw how nervous the other woman was. There was a slight shake to her as she approached their table. Leah watched the two of them, and the look in Frank’s eyes. She knew she had done the right thing.

“Cameron,” Frank said.

She was pretty sure she heard the longing in his voice.

“Frank.”

Cain grabbed their baked goods from the tray, and he placed hers in front of her. She offered him a smile, but she was more interested in the love that was happening right before her eyes. They were both so happy. The moment the tray was empty, Frank took it from her, and Leah watched as he cupped Cameron’s face and then kissed her, hard.

She watched them, and all the time, she was aware of Cain close to her. What was he thinking? Did seeing the two of them make him think of them?

It was insane. There was no them. They had one disastrous moment with each other, and it was never going to happen again.

“Where are my manners?” Frank said, and turned toward them.

Cain held his hand up. “You don’t need to. We already know who she is and what she means to you.”

“You did this?” Frank asked.

“No, Leah did this. I thought it was a bad idea, and I still think it is a bad idea. This is not going to get you out of doing your job,” Cain said. “I still expect you to cook for me.”

“Nothing will change.”

Leah knew it wouldn’t change the quality of the food, but Frank would change, and she didn’t see how that was a bad thing. Just by looking at him, she knew he was happier. She had no regrets.

They stayed long enough to finish their coffee and baked goods. Leaving Frank behind to be with his woman, Leah linked her arm through Cain’s as they left the shop.

“Come on, are you angry with me?” she asked.

“I will be angry with you if he quits.”

“He won’t quit, but he might want to take a few more vacations. Besides, you like my cooking.”

Cain grumbled. “She better not hurt him.”

Leah smiled.

“You know, for being a tough guy, you’re really kind of sweet.” She rested her head on his shoulder. Today was a good day. She felt like she had helped put something right back in the world.

This was a good thing. The right thing.

Cain took them back to his place. She left her keys with Frank, seeing as she drove him to the café, so he’d be able to bring her car back.

Once they arrived at home, Cain went to his office, and Leah decided to take a swim in the pool. It had been too long since she swam.

She changed into her swimsuit, then made her way outside to the separate building that housed the pool. It wasn’t as big as a full-sized pool, but big enough to do some laps, which she did.

She felt on cloud nine. Helping Frank felt so good.

Now, she couldn’t help but think about another man. Cain.

Her thoughts went straight to the other night—his kisses, his hands on her body as he tore off her dress. How good he’d felt between her thighs. There had been pain on the initial penetration, but that changed, only she didn’t get to know what it changed into, because Cain ruined it.

Time passed. Leah floated on her back and stared up at the ceiling, which was clear, allowing her to look at the night sky. Stars glinted above them.

She wondered if there was another dimension, where her life was playing out, and on that night, Cain didn’t leave. He stayed. She wondered what would have happened.

“Are you asleep?”

Leah stood up in the pool and saw Cain crouched down, near the edge.

“No, I wasn’t asleep.”

“You want to tell me what you were thinking about?” he asked.

Leah stared at him, and a small part of her was tempted to tell him exactly what she was thinking about, but instead she offered him a smile and looked at him.

He’d opened the top few buttons of his shirt, showing off some of his chest. His sleeves were rolled up, and it was like his arms appeared thicker somehow. She couldn’t explain it.

“I wasn’t thinking about anything,” she said. The little white lie falling from her lips.

She had stepped out of the pool and reached for a towel.

Cain stood up, and she marveled at how tall he was. She licked her lips as she felt heat flood between her thighs. She had complete control over her body, over everything, as she looked at him. This was just attraction. It meant nothing. She still hated him for how he behaved.
