“I don’t think he’s that bad,” Aria said. “Not that I can say much about him. You’ve known him longer than I have, but when it comes to the dogs, he’s always there.”

She thought back to him at the veterinary practice with Andy and Phil. Yes, Grant flitted between jobs but he was always great at what he did. When he was around the dogs and at the shelter, he was in control. There was more to Grant than met the eye. Aria didn’t know exactly what it was, but she saw it in his eyes.

“That’s good,” Maddie said. “I know Grant can be an ass and mean, and he can be cruel, but when he allows himself to open up, to be there, he’s the best guy to have around.”

“Do you and him have a past?” Aria asked.

“Me and him. Hell, no. Ugh, no. We’ve become friends, I think. It’s hard to make sense of what we call ourselves.”

Aria laughed. She just couldn’t help it. The look of complete disgust on Maddie’s face said it all.

“Grant was no saint. There were always a lot of women hanging around him, but you’re different. He’s different with you.”

“He is?” Aria asked.

“Yeah, you’re here because he cares about you. Grant doesn’t care about women. They were…” She stopped and Aria chuckled at the cringing look on Maddie’s face. “I should stop. He’s your boyfriend?”

“We’ve not really said what we are,” Aria said. “I guess we’re dating, I think. I’m not sure.”

They hadn’t been on a date date. Not really. This was confusing.

“Look, Grant is different with you. He cares about you and I know for a fact no one has ever been able to hold onto him, not for longer than a couple of hours. That must mean something. You matter to him, Aria.”

Nibbling her lip, she smiled at Maddie.

Bull came in with a young baby on his hip.

Aria cut up her breakfast, trying not to calorie count in her head. She didn’t want to be rude to Maddie or the club by not eating the food they’d provided.

She had to wonder if they had a gym, someplace for her to work out.

Finishing off the breakfast, there was no sign of Grant’s return, so she made her way back to his bedroom.

She sat on the edge of the bed and then realized she hadn’t called Lidia. Her best friend would want to know why she hadn’t called or texted. Lidia was going to freak when Aria told her she was staying at the Chaos and Carnage MC clubhouse. Opening her cell phone, she saw that she had a video message waiting for her from an unknown number. Aria couldn’t recall giving her number to anyone else recently.

When she saw the title of the message, “Who Grant really is,” Aria hated the temptation. Before she could even question herself, she started to play the video. It wasn’t longer than a minute and at first it wasn’t even in focus.

“What are you doing?” She recognized Isabella’s voice.

The camera suddenly stilled and then she saw them. Grant and Isabella.

“What happened nine months ago, you never speak a fucking word of it. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t know you, you don’t know me, got it?”

“I would never … I promise. It was a moment of weakness.”

“It wasn’t weakness on my part. I was looking for a quick fuck, and you were there. You meant nothing to me. But Aria is the real deal. You say anything to hurt her, and I will end you, got it?”

“Michael, he can’t know.”

“Not a fucking word.”

Then, as if the person who invaded the moment of privacy realized what they were doing, the video ended. It just came to a stop. Aria figured that was it, but then another video played.

“Who the fuck does she think she is?” That was definitely Grant’s voice.

The video looked old, like it was taken with an old-fashioned camera rather than a cell phone. She spotted Grant, and then someone who looked like Maddie.

“Dude, come on, she’s no good. She’s way too innocent and sweet. Virginal.”

“Nah, man, the only reason that fat ass is a virgin is because no one would want to see all the layers of fat to get to the pussy.” Grant burst out laughing. “Fuck, I hate fat people.”

The video ended.

Aria didn’t know what to think. Grant had known her sister. He’d slept with her sister. All night long they acted like strangers. Aria didn’t even realize that they could have known each other. She was so freaking stupid.

Tears filled her eyes. What had Grant been doing with her all this time? Was it a joke?

She hated that she allowed the tears to fall. This wasn’t fair. None of this was fair.

What do you expect? Your mom is right. She is always right.
