“I’m fine. I didn’t even need to go to the doctor. I promise. And Remy—”
“Remy, what? Why didn’t he take you to the hospital? Damn it, Isabelle.”
Crap. She needed to calm him down.
“Remy helped me. He said he would take me to the hospital if he thought I needed to go. But I didn’t.”
“You could have had internal injuries. You still could!”
“I don’t, Loki. I’m all good. It was just a small crash.”
“Why’d it happen?”
Fuck.
“I got blinded by another car’s lights.”
“Remy’s?”
“No, just some strange car. No one we know.” Well, she hoped not.
“Probably some damn tourist, driving too fast on roads they don’t know,” he muttered as he paced back and forth in front of her. “You need a dashcam.”
She wasn’t going to tell him that Remy had said the same thing. That wouldn’t go down well.
“All right.”
“And I’m driving you to and from work until your car is fixed.”
“Thank you.” She knew better than to argue.
“And even once you have your car back, if you have to work late, you’ll call me. I’ll come get you.”
Now, that one wasn’t so easy to agree to.
“We’ll see.”
He stormed back over to situate himself between her legs. “No ‘we’ll see,’ Tink. That’s an order.”
Isabelle gave him a firm look back, pressing a finger to his chest. “You don’t get to give me orders, Lachlan Wilder.”
He crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m in charge of you. I’m the oldest. It’s my job to make the rules, yours to follow them.”
She rolled her eyes at him. “I’m not seven anymore.”
No, but sometimes she liked to regress even younger. Loki gave her a knowing look and she ducked her head in embarrassment.
“I just want to take care of you, Tink.”
“I know. I know you do. Sorry I worried you.”
“Not your fault, Tinkerbelle. And if I didn’t have you to worry over, then what would I do with all my time?” he joked.
She snorted and he cuddled her close, running his hand up and down her back as she breathed him in. “Love you, Lachie.”
“Love you too, Isabelle.”
They stayed like that for a while until she forced herself to pull back. It would be all too easy to let herself just give in and tell him how she felt about him.
It will ruin everything.
“Right. So you mentioned bumper cars?”
He eyed her. “Nah, I was thinking I felt more like a corn dog.”
“Really?” She clapped her hands together. “And cotton candy?”
“Cotton candy? That shit will rot your teeth!”
She pouted.
“Let’s get two bags!”
She squealed, clapping her hands together as he turned around. “Get on, Tink.”
She climbed onto his back, and he grabbed hold of her before heading over to the food carts. Her stomach rumbled, reminding her that she hadn’t eaten breakfast.
“Faster, horsie! Faster!” she cried, giggling as he let out a neigh and started galloping.
That jolted her around which kind of hurt her bruised chest, but she wasn’t going to tell him to stop for anything.
Finally, they reached the food cart. Loki looked up at the woman. “I want the biggest bunch of cotton candy you can make.”
The woman smiled. “You got it.”
She soon handed back a huge circle of cotton candy that was precariously clinging to a stick.
Isa laughed as Loki let her down so she could take hold of it. “It’s nearly bigger than me!”
“I think you might suffocate eating that thing,” Loki agreed after paying for it. “You better let me help you eat it.” He buried his face right in it.
Oh my God! He was going to eat it all!
Giggling, she attacked the cotton candy from the other side, eating the soft, sugary goodness that went crunchy when she touched it.
God, it was sickening. Way too sweet.
And oh, so delicious.
“Hey! I want cotton candy the size of a house!” someone cried.
She turned to see Kiesha pouting as Harry shook his head at her.
“Well, that’s no fair,” Kiesha said.
“You ate three cupcakes while you were selling them,” Harry pointed out as they made their way over to where she and Loki were still working their way through the cotton candy.
“Here! Take this!” Isa grabbed a bit of the cotton candy and held it out to Kiesha, who took it and held it in the air like a sword.
“Free the cotton candy!” Kiesha cried and took off running.
Harry just sighed, grinning as he shook his head.
“Um, sorry. I got a bit carried away,” Isa said, giving Harry an apologetic look.
Harry gave her a knowing look back. Then he grinned. “Don’t apologize, we both know I was going to give in and let her have some. Although she’s going to crash soon and crash hard. So I better go find her. You two have fun and brush your teeth.”
She stared over at Loki, who had bits of candyfloss in his beard and she started giggling.
“What? Do I have something on my face?”
