Loki just bet he had.
And fuck! He should have been the one here to help Isa. Why did he always fuck this up?
He had to do better than this.
For Isa.
He loved her, but he knew he couldn’t be everything she needed. Isa deserved someone stable. Someone who could look after her. Especially when she was in Little headspace.
She needed a Daddy.
And Loki wasn’t that.
But fuck . . . he wished he was. Sometimes he had ideas . . . things he’d like to do to her. Tying her up featured heavily.
However, there was no way he could trust himself to take charge like that. What if he had a flashback? What if he accidentally hurt her?
No.
It was much safer that he didn’t engage in anything like that. Not with his Isa. It was his job to protect her.
Even if that meant protecting her from him.
“Fuck, sorry, Tink. I was supposed to help with the cupcakes. I forgot.”
“It’s all right.” She leaned into him, patting his chest. “I understand.”
Part of him wished that she’d rage at him. That she wouldn’t be so fucking understanding.
Because it wasn’t right that he forgot. That he didn’t do something he’d promised to do.
Then something else occurred to him and he grabbed her hands, inspecting them closely.
“What is it?” she asked.
“Jennifer and the others. They didn’t attack you when you went to get the eggs? Or did you go buy some?” His gaze went to the window. If he opened the curtains would he find a psychotic chicken on the other side?
He had no idea how his chickens had come to be possessed. All he knew was that they were.
“Um, actually, Remy got the eggs for me.”
Fucking Remy.
Wait.
“They let him? They were happy with him in their enclosure?” he asked. “Is his dick all right?”
Shit. That was a question he never thought he’d ask.
“Uh, I wouldn’t say they were happy. But they haven’t exacted their revenge so I think we’re okay. And he came out with everything unharmed.”
Christ. So now he owed this bastard for stopping to help Isa with her car trouble and retrieving eggs from his she-demon chickens.
“I really am sorry, Tink. I wish I’d been here to help you. Is your car all right?”
“It’s at the garage. I’m not sure how long it will take to get fixed, though. I’m thinking about renting a car since I still have to get to work on Monday.”
She should quit that job. He knew it didn’t make her happy anymore and he hated that. But he bit back those words.
Saying that in the past had never gone well for him, strangely enough.
“You know I’ll take you.” In fact, he needed to take her. He didn’t like the idea of her broken down on the side of the road for anyone to come along and hurt her.
And in this case, anyone was the man who stared at her way too much.
Remy.
Not that he’d hurt her. Loki wanted to hate him. It was burning a hole in his gut. He’d been there for her when Loki couldn’t be.
Fuck his screwed-up fucking mind.
“I know you will,” she said softly. “But you shouldn’t have to. I’m a big girl.”
No, she wasn’t.
Sometimes she had to be. But he knew that other times she just wanted to sink into Little headspace and forget about the world. All of her worries and concerns.
He got it.
Because he’d give anything to be able to do the same. Going into nature gave him some respite. Being with Isa brought him more peace. But the last thing Loki wanted was to be a burden.
Isa had had to grow up fast because of her asshole dad and stepmom. She’d lost her childhood.
And he hated that.
“I don’t like you driving that much on your own anyway,” he said. He’d always hated it. He still didn’t understand why she couldn’t work for him.
But she’d told him that she didn’t want a job just handed to her. That she had to earn it.
What kind of bullshit was that?
“You okay?” She snuggled in against him. “What do you need?”
Loki wrapped an arm around her, breathing her in.
She smelled like happiness.
Like home.
And she always had.
“Just you.”
That’s all he’d ever needed.

Remy decided to leave before Loki and Isa got up. This was Loki’s home and he clearly didn’t want Remy here. Plus, he had to go home and shower.
But he was also leaving because he was jealous as fuck.
Loki had slept in her bedroom. How often did that happen?
When she was his . . . what if Loki needed her like that again?
Was he feeling jealous because he felt like an outsider? The third wheel? That he’d been left out?
Hmm.
Remy rubbed his head. He needed a shower and some more sleep, then he’d be able to think more clearly. It was still dark outside as he walked to his truck.
