“I was going to use that to blackmail him later when Brad was ready to run for senate. The senator could step down and back him. But the bastard had to go and get murdered.”

She was so evil. How had she never seen it?

“Bunny?” The Fox walked over and placed a cool hand on the back of her neck. “Just breathe.”

“What is this? Who are these men? Did you finally find someone who would want your pathetic pussy?” Laura spat out.

“Shut the fuck up,” the Fox said darkly, turning to her. He leaned over her, putting his hand on her throat. “Talk to her like that again and I’ll cut out your tongue.”

Laura paled, whimpering.

“Fox,” Brody said. “You don’t want any marks on her.”

The Fox snarled down at Laura, then he stepped back. She longed to go to him, to soothe him. But she knew she couldn’t. This was his show to run.

“What are you talking about Laura?” Brad asked. “What do you mean you drugged her? You helped the senator kidnap her? Why?”

“Because you are mine!” Laura screeched. “You were always meant to be mine. You had a plan to get rid of John and I was going to get rid of her! Then we could be together!”

“But . . . I never knew you were going to have her kidnapped. I could have broken things off with her. Only John needed to die.”

“What?” Autumn asked. “You killed John?”

“My father has old-fashioned beliefs about marriage,” Laura said. “If I divorced John, he would have disowned me. Cut me off! It’s the only thing he truly couldn’t forgive. I would have been poor. Plus, I had a pre-nup with John. I would have walked away with nothing when I put up with his sad ass for years. If he died a tragic death it was a win-win for me.”

Whoa. Autumn could barely believe any of this.

“I thought he died in a car accident,” she whispered.

“Poor Autumn, always so naïve,” Laura sneered.

“Watch it,” the Fox warned.

“You didn’t really think I wanted to be friends with you, did you?” she said, ignoring the Fox’s warning. “Pathetic and sad. Poor little Autumn. So shy and quiet. All those times I offered to go with Brad to dinners and functions, you didn’t have a clue that we were fucking, did you? Christ, I even put a tracking device in that stupid necklace you wear and you didn’t even know. For some reason, I wasn’t able to track you recently, though. I thought it had stopped working. Until it appeared last night. I already had someone on retainer before you disappeared. He rushed to your location to snatch you. Seems you can’t find good help on the darkweb, though.”

“I have blockers at the den,” the Fox said. “Which is why the tracker wouldn’t work there. Fuck. Shit. Why didn’t I check for trackers on you?”

Autumn hated how devastated he looked. “You couldn’t have known she’d do that.”

“I still should have checked,” he muttered.

“But why track her?” Brody asked.

“So I knew where she was when I was fucking Brad, of course. Couldn’t have her walking in and seeing us. I had an alarm set if she got close. And after . . . well, I didn’t have a chance to remove it. Figured it didn’t matter anyway. She never went anywhere, she wasn’t worth bothering about. Until recently.”

“I can’t believe you did all of this,” Brad said. “Autumn, I didn’t know.”

Surely, he must have had some idea of what she was like, though.

“Don’t act so innocent,” Laura spat out. “You’re pathetic, Brad. Getting her to sign an NDA wasn’t going to take care of things. It wouldn’t stop her from talking to the press or the cops.”

“The cops?” she asked. “Why did you want me to sign that NDA? Because you didn’t want me to tell the press about how you broke up with me? What does that have to do with the police? I didn’t have any idea that Laura was behind the kidnapping.”

“Of course you didn’t! It was brilliant. No, Brad was worried that you’d seen the Broker the night he met with him . . . at his house. You’re so dumb, Brad.” Laura glared at Brad.

Who was the Broker? What were they talking about?

“Shut up, Laura. And I told you that I spoke to the Broker after I failed to get her to sign the NDA. He said that she never saw him that night. And that he would never break client confidentiality. He also warned me away from going near her. Said that not only did he feel protective of her, but that she had a dangerous protector.” Brad looked at the Fox. “You?”

“The Broker is a professional,” the Fox said. “He’d never break confidentiality. His career is built on his ability to keep his mouth shut. I don’t know him well, but I did tell him that Autumn was under my protection and then I gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse.”
