No, he preferred the hands-on approach.

He longed to yell out to Brody, to tell him to hide. But he didn’t dare turn his attention from the jerk in front of him. Last thing he wanted was the jerk shooting at his Pup.

“Do you know what I have?” he asked instead.

“Stop throwing it up and down, you’re not going to stop me!”

“Oh, I’m not? Are you so sure? See, because I’m planning on killing you, slowly and painfully. Maybe I’ll slice you up a bit first. You’ll be hoping you’ll bleed to death, but the cuts won’t be deep enough for that. They’ll hurt. Especially if I go deeper for a few, right into the muscle. But the slice across your belly will be really painful. See, I like to do this thing where you pull someone’s entrails out—”

“Shut up, you fucker!” he screamed, turning the gun back on the Fox.

Good, that was just what he wanted. He smiled.

“Oh, but you stopped me at the best part.”

“Hey, asshole, cops are coming and you’re surrounded. Let her go! Now!” Brody aimed the gun at him as the guy turned.

“Brody, drop!” the Fox roared, racing toward the asshole.

But he was too late. The gun went off and Autumn screamed.

Fuck. Fuck.

Please let Brody be okay.

He couldn’t deal with it if anything happened to his babies. That wasn’t allowed. They weren’t allowed to die on him. Especially not since it was his job to take care of them.

He’d fucking failed.

He never failed.

He never should have brought them here.

“Fuck this! It’s not worth the money.” Suddenly, the guy pushed Autumn toward him and then took off for the door.

The Fox caught Autumn, setting her to one side, before he headed for the door.

“Brody!” Autumn screamed, calling his attention away from the asshole who’d raced out the door.

Fuck.

Spinning, he searched them out. He saw Brody leaning against a machine, Autumn crouched next to him.

“Brody, Brody, are you okay? Oh no, oh no, there’s blood. Fox, there’s blood. He’s gonna die! Oh God! Oh God!”

His heart stopped. He felt it give in as he raced over, sliding on his knees toward them.

Fuck! Brody had been shot.

As soon as his Pup was all right, because there was no way he was going to die, he was going to kill him. He wouldn’t be sitting for a week. And his baby girl wasn’t going to get off much easier since she’d run off when he said to wait.

Oh yes, things were going to change.

“I’m fine, Tutu. It’s just a scratch,” Brody said tiredly. “I’m not going to die, promise.”

The Fox gently moved a weeping Autumn to one side so he could properly inspect the cut. It was little more than a scratch. The bullet must have just nicked him. But the fact that he’d come that close to a bullet was completely unacceptable.

“It’s okay, Tutu. Fox, tell her that I’m all good. It’s just a scratch, right?

The Fox grunted, then turned to Autumn who was now pressed to Brody’s other side, buried in against him. Her shoulders were moving up and down as though she was sobbing.

“It’s just a scratch,” he confirmed. He drew off his shirt and wrapped it tight around Brody’s arm. “He won’t die.”

Brody hissed in pain. “Does it have to be that tight?”

“Yes.”

“My arm might fall off.”

Autumn let out a louder sob and panic filled Brody’s face as he stared down at her. “Tutu, I didn’t mean that. I’m fine. Fox, help me.”

Help him? How was he meant to do that? How could he make Autumn feel better when he wasn’t even capable of keeping them fucking safe?

He’d been so fucking arrogant.

His cockiness had almost gotten his girl kidnapped and his boy was injured.

Brody gave him a worried look. “Papa? Are you doing okay?”

He shook off the emotions bombarding him.

“Fine. Autumn, it’s just a scratch. Stop crying and help me.” He knew his voice was too cold. That he should search for something soothing to say. But he didn’t have it in him right now. He had to get them out of here and safely away in case that asshole had friends or was planning on returning.

“I need to get you both back to the den safely. I want you both to do exactly what I say, understand? You’re both in enough trouble, you do not want to add to it.”

Autumn stared at him in surprise, her eyes glassy with tears, her cheeks red and blotchy. She wiped at her nose, sniffling. “What are we in trouble for?”

“Brody was supposed to hide and didn’t. And you ran off instead of waiting for us. You’re both to do as I say.” He helped Brody up. The other man was pretty steady and he had him walk on his own to check he’d be all right. The Fox would rather have both of his hands free.
