“Could be greed, pure and simple,” Decker answered.
“Yeah. That I could see, and prospects are cheap labor. Even better for them, by using prospects, if they get popped, they’re easy to replace. They could say that the prospect was doing it on their own so the drug dealing isn’t tied to the pizza shop.”
“Right. It creates some separation there as long as the prospect doesn’t turn against the MC to save his own ass.”
Crew’s sigh came loud and clear from the phone. “No truer words… I wonder if they wear their colors while doing these pizza deliveries.”
“Guess I’ll find out soon enough.”
“When do you start?”
Decker huffed out a breath. “Tomorrow. Wolf wants me there before they open at eleven. That’s why I insisted you call me back tonight. I wanted to give you the heads up.”
“If you end up dealing, just keep track of the details of each sale in your daily report. It’s not much different than Fletch’s buys.”
“It sure as fuck is. Fletch is using the feds’ money to buy drugs. That results in those drugs being taken off the street. This is putting drugs on the street, Crew. Actually, to be more specific, in people’s homes. And I’ll have a hand in that.”
“You knew what you might have to do when you volunteered for this UC assignment, Deck.”
Sloane could hear the irritation in Crew’s voice. But even more so in Decker’s when he practically shouted, “You didn’t have anyone else to fucking do it!”
Shit.
“Look, I appreciate you stepping up, but you knew the potential was there to get directly involved in slinging meth. There’s no fucking way you thought you’d be lounging around their clubhouse all fucking day.”
Such a long pause followed she thought they might’ve hung up until she heard Crew ask, “Have you seen Saint coming and going?” in an attempt to change the direction the call was going. Which was south.
It took a few more seconds for Decker to answer. She assumed he was trying to rein in his aggravation. “Not yet. I’ve only been a prospect for a few days, Crew.”
“Make sure you’re listing everyone who’s hanging at the clubhouse in your daily report. When you head to the pizza shop, make sure to put whoever’s working there in your reports, too.”
“Don’t treat me like a goddamn rookie.”
A huff came through the phone, but Crew’s voice remained calm and steady when he said, “Just a friendly reminder, that’s all.”
“Speaking of reminders… We have to get cameras set up at their church. Especially now that I’ll be tied up with this damn pizza shop for most of the time.”
“Get me enough PC for an affidavit and I’ll get a judge to sign off on it like we did for The Peach Pit. The second the ink dries, I’ll have the Black Box team go in and set it up.”
“There’s a problem with that plan.”
A sigh came through the phone. “What?”
“No one lived at The Peach Pit, so the installation crew had a time where they could get in and out without being caught. They’re building rooms at the gas station for some of them to live there.”
“But they’re not finished yet, right?”
“Only one is completed so far. From what I overheard, a prospect already moved in and, for now, he’s the one responsible to keep an eye on the place.”
“And the drugs.”
“Yeah, and their stash,” Decker confirmed. “Do you think we should have cameras installed at the pizza shop, too?”
“We can’t wire every damn business they’re buying. But I’ll run it past the higher ups. However, since you’ll be ‘working’ out of that location, we probably won’t need to bug it. You’ll be able to carry a cell phone with you, unlike at the strip club, and as of now, we’ll assume you’ll be handling the meth. With your documentation, that should be plenty to put that location on our hit list for when shit goes down. But we can revisit that if it turns out you really are only delivering pizza.”
“Right,” Decker answered before muttering, “What the fuck’s taking her so long?”
Shit. She needed to get out there before he came looking for her.
“Who? Val? Shouldn’t she be in bed by now?”
“No…”
“Then who?”
“Nobody.”
“Uh huh. Nobody. I’ve fucked plenty of nobodies, too. You getting a little tonight, brother?”
“You’d be the last person I told if I was.”
Crew’s laughter filled the patio as Sloane opened the door and stepped out into the chilly night.
As soon as she did, he turned off the speaker and put the phone to his ear. “Gotta go. I’ll check in with you tomorrow,” he said quickly and stabbed the screen with his finger.
“Sorry for taking so long. I haven’t unpacked everything yet, so it took me a while to dig through the boxes.” She moved past him and dropped the towel she grabbed from the bathroom onto the lounge chair closest to the hot tub. With her back to Decker, she shrugged out of her robe, then threw that on top of her towel.
