“Shouldn’t we go face down these assholes? This is our turf.”
“What the fuck are you on Clayton? Turf my ass; you think I give a fuck about that childish bullshit. If these assholes wanna leave wherever they came from and come all the way out here to mess with people they don’t know for a buck, that’s on them. My fight is with Davis, I’m not gonna rest until he’s dispatched with his daddy, the rest of them can go fuck themselves.”
“Law, you sure this is the right move? I mean we don’t know anything about these guys. We might not go after them, but what’s to stop them coming after us?”
“Let them. If they come here, then we defend ourselves, but we’re not going after them, they don’t matter.” Okay it isn’t him, I know it’s not Brandon, he’s got enough shit to deal with, so who?

BRANDON
I lay on the bed next to her holding her in my arms. “I thought this shit was called morning sickness, why the hell are you throwing up in the middle of the day? Something wrong with my kid?”
“No, the book says it could happen like this sometimes.” She was soft and cuddly, and I’m a pig. I’d just held her hair back while she puked her guts out and all I can think about is putting her under me.
“Book, what book?” I pushed the hair back from her face so I could see into her eyes. I was trying to see her old man in her, ever since she’d told me the story it’s all I’ve been doing, I couldn’t help myself.
Everyone knew what this could all mean. Not just that I’d got his unknown daughter pregnant, she was of age. But the fact that her mother’s side of the family were known racist fucks who weren’t shy about letting the world know what they are.
They’ve been in the national news for crap sake, joyously spreading their own particular brand of hate. I could give a dry fuck about all that, it’s what it would all mean to the child she was carrying that I was worried about.
“Why are you staring at me like that?”
“You have his eyes, and a little bit around the lips. The more I see you the more I see it. Now what book are you talking about?”
She sat up and reached for the nightstand drawer. “Ginger Lee got it for me.” This shit was real; I mean I knew it was, but the book and the throwing up, that shit was some in your face reality for your ass.
She read a passage out the book that said morning sickness was more common in the evenings, which made no damn sense to me, but the fuck do I know. “We have to get you a doctor, Melissa said she knows one.”
“Yeah but I have my own doctor from before.”
“Are you bent? You think I’m letting you take my kid to some doctor your family chose for you? Not a chance.”
“But he’s a doctor, what can he do?”
“He, oh hell no baby girl. No he’s gonna see my woman naked unless he wants me to cap his ass.”
She thought that shit was funny by the way she howled and threw herself into my arms. “What’s so funny?”
She got serious on me and refused to look into my eyes until I lifted her chin with my finger. “Tell me.”
“I didn’t know you cared.” Her voice had gone all soft and unsure, making something inside me twist painfully.
Damn, I’d been thinking about my kid so hard, I’d forgotten that she was in a rough spot too. This couldn’t be easy for her, and I still didn’t know why she’d chosen me. Granted there weren’t that many men of color in our neck of the woods, but there were a few.
She’d given me part of the story, but with everything going on, I hadn’t had time to really get into it, I was too busy trying to ensure their safety, hers and my unborn son or daughter’s. “I know we didn’t meet under the best of circumstances, but that night, if I didn’t want you too, none of this would’ve happened.” It was nothing less than the truth and she needed to know, that baby or not, I still found her desirable. Women like shit like that.
“I know, but now I feel kinda bad. I tricked you.” She played with my chest but still wouldn’t look at me.
“Regrets Illyana?” I rolled over on top of her being careful not to put too much weight on her still flat tummy.
I held her eyes with mine as I sent my hand on an exploration. She was still all smooth lines and angles, no sign yet of the kid that I’d planted in her womb. That night, everything was moving so fast, I didn’t have time to enjoy the sight of her. Now I wanna take my time and learn every inch.
