“Shit,” he mutters through clenched teeth, fighting the wind and rain.
Fear shoots through me as he speeds through the town that’s now empty except for us two fools and mother nature. Hell, he wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for me.
“I’m so sorry that I got you into this mess.”
“No, it’s not your fault, although you shouldn’t have been here in the first place.” His lips are pursed, and he doesn’t glance at me. I can tell he’s pissed as hell, but he won’t snap. I might be wrong about being afraid of Mr. Knight because suddenly I’m terrified that he’s going to hate me if something bad happens tonight.
“I’m really sorry.”
“Stop it, Honey. Just sit back and let me focus on not getting us killed.” I shut my mouth and let him drive, hoping that we make it wherever he plans to take us. Right now, the weather seems to only get worse by the second.
The windshield wipers are going insane, whooshing across the window at rapid speed, sending water back and forth, but nothing is clearing the view in front of us. My fingers tensely grip the front of the bench seat, holding on for dear life.
“Relax, I won’t let anything happen to you, Honey.” The sound of his voice works magic and some of the stress leaves me.
“You promise?” I ask, calming down.
“Of course.” He doesn’t look at me, but I see the slight upturn of his lips and I understand that he means it. We drive for another five minutes through the rough weather, and then it seems to move behind us. It’s still dangerous, but it’s not hitting us head on.
Suddenly we pulled off the main road and drove up a hill where the rain was light and the winds hadn’t reached yet. He speeds off so effortlessly in the darkness like he’s done this path a thousand times and then we come to a large driveway and I know he has. This is his property. He opens the garage and he drives the vehicle inside. As the door comes down a light in the garage comes on, giving me some security from the fearsome storm outside.
“Relax, baby girl. I told you I’d keep you safe. Now, let’s get inside before things get worse.” If he didn’t show up, worse would be an understatement. I would have been dead or dying. If I hadn’t been killed by whatever stupid blowing debris, I would be swept away by the rushing water. There’s no way I would have made it to my small two-door coupe.
“Fuck, you’re shaking.” I hadn’t realized I was, but when I glimpse upward, Mr. Knight is holding me in his arms.
When did he carry me out of the truck?
Chapter Three
Axel
Fuck, she was practically catatonic when I took her out of the truck. I carry my most precious cargo inside the house, needing to get her warm and get some sugar in her. Once I get her seated on the kitchen island it’s like she’s suddenly back from wherever she was.
“I’m sorry,” she said for the fourth or fifth time and it’s getting on my nerves because it doesn’t matter. I’d do anything to protect her, love her, and keep her safe. If I’d gotten to her sooner, she wouldn’t have been in danger at all. Shit, if I’d claimed her years ago when I first crossed paths with her, she never would have been in danger and she’d be tucked away with our kids.
“Stop saying sorry. Just tell me what you need. You hungry, thirsty, cold, tired. Fuck, are you hurt?” I don’t bother waiting for an answer, I start running my hands all over her body, looking for any injuries.
She groans, but then I meet her gaze and realize I’d gone and cupped her tits. They are so damn soft and her plump nipples hardened from the cold, wet rain that soaked her top. Clearing my throat, I release the juicy handfuls and step back. “Sorry. Tell me if you’re okay.”
“I’m fine. Really, I just owe you my life. You saved my life, Mr. Knight” Fuck me. That isn’t what I want to hear. I don’t want her to be indebted to me. No, I want her to need me the way I fucking breathe for her. It’s highly doubtful that would ever happen because I’m fifteen years older than her and there’s men her age ready to fall at her feet. Her brother didn’t just hit a sore spot. The jackass cut me deep.
“I have everything just in case we lose power, but my generator should kick on shortly afterward.” She leans into me, exhausted. As incredible as it is to have Honey pressed against me, she needs me to care for her, not lust after her warm delectable curves that belong under me. “Let me get you in bed, and I’ll make sure nothing happens to you.”
