When we initially invited my mom to Ohio for Christmas, we never expected her to say yes. We’re glad she did—of course—but this will be the first time she’ll be meeting Sloane’s family, and with all of us staying in the same house, it’s going to be interesting.
I have no doubt there’ll be zero dull moments.
That’s one of the best parts about having a family.
It’s never boring.
When Sloane first found this rental, she was so excited she screamed. Literally. I heard her from the next room over and rushed down to find out what was wrong. It turns out, this old Victorian mansion in her hometown was always her favorite house growing up, and she always dreamed of living there as a little girl. With nine bedrooms, ten baths, a horse stable, and a million breakable antiques, I’m prepared for an expensive week.
Correction—a priceless week.
“Attention, Delta passengers, we’re about to begin our boarding process for flight 5215 with nonstop service to Cincinnati . . . ,” the gate attendant announces.
“Here we go,” Sloane says. “Christmas in Ohio . . .”
I lean in and steal a kiss from my wife’s smiling lips. While everyone around us gathers their bags and makes their way to the line forming outside our gate, I take a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come. It’s been a pretty amazing ride so far, and I have no doubt things are only going to get better.
