Sky started picking up her pace but then skidded to another stop, almost causing the train crash as before. Again, she blocked Indi at his knees with her body. She bit gently on the tips of his fingers, indicating whoever ahead of them had a gun.
“Tell me what you’re seeing,” Indi whispered to Hollister. “Are they right fucking in front of me?”
“No! I’d be screaming at the top of my lungs if they were. We’re on the corner of a hallway. Whatever Sky has alerted on must be down the hall on the right. I’m scared shitless, Indi. I can’t hardly catch a breath.”
“I know. It’s a panic attack. Try counting your breaths and lean against the wall. If this goes bad, get out of here and get back to the house, Hollister. Don’t wait on me, Clay, or Levi. Just go. Take care of the boys.” As he talked, Indigo pulled out the bendable cane that announced to just about anybody that he was blind. He snapped it open and had it tapping on the ground immediately. “Remember…run!”
Indi started walking, Sky leading the way and his cane tapping back and forth. He hoped he looked very vulnerable and helpless. He was going to need every advantage he could come up with. Maybe a miracle or two.
“Hey! You! You can’t be back here!” A loud male voice shouted at him. “Turn around now and head back the way you came!”
“Calm down, Donovan,” a female voice answered. “He’s blind…and fucking hot. Keep coming this way, pretty boy. You and I could have bunches of fun while Donovan watches. You dog is lovely. Does she bite? I know you aren’t supposed to touch service dogs, but I’m not one to follow the rules.”
“Shut the fuck up, Trish. The boss will kill you.”
“Just like I’m going to kill this pretty thing when I’m finished playing with him,” Trish answered with a laugh. “Come on, little mouse. Show cat woman if you know how to play.”
“Wh-what’s going on?” Indigo fake stuttered. “I think I must have made a wrong turn. I was looking for Dr. Stevenson.”
The man laughed. “You definitely took a wrong turn. It’s going to cost you, kiddo.”
“C-cost me what?” Indi couldn’t believe his luck. Unless the others were being incredibly quiet, it was only the two.
“Just your life, little mouse,” Trish answered calmly. “You’ve really made a boner move.”
Indi smiled. “No, I don’t think I have. The Doctor sent me down, just to check up on you two idiots.” For the first time, they were quiet.
Finally, the man said, “You’re lying. Ain’t no way the Doc would hire a stupid blind guy.”
Indi shrugged. “You’re right. What good is a blind guy?” He dropped the cane and unleashed Sky. “Sky, attack!” Naturally, she went for the woman. Damn dog knew he’d go soft on a woman, but Sky wouldn’t. Sky saw them only as threats.
He felt the air move and ducked just as the man attempted to punch him. Using the momentum against him, Indi lowered the rest of his body and plowed into the guy’s chest, sending him flipping over the top of Indi and landing with a hard thud. In the background, Trish screamed and pleaded for her life. Too bad for her that Sky didn’t know those words. It didn’t take the male attacker long to recover and make another move against Indi. He managed to slide in a skim of a punch on Indi’s jaw—just enough to give Indi the location he needed. After that, it was all training. Kicks. Punches. Choke holds. Everything Indi had in his basket of killers-are-us. He was beginning to wonder if it was going to be enough when Sky finished with Trish and stepped up to finish Indi’s job. A gurgling sound indicated Sky had gone straight for the throat.
“Hollister! You okay?” Indi whisper yelled…if there was such a thing. “Tell me you’re okay!”
“I’m fine and right next to you. Those two were guarding a door at the end of this hall.”
Indi heard Hollister moving the guy around and fumbling with his clothes. Finally, he said, “Keys! Yes! Let’s get Clay and Levi and get the fuck out of here. I need to bleach my eyes after what I’ve witnessed today.”
Indi’s heart pounded as Hollister fumbled with different keys before he found the right one. Clay had to be inside the room…he had to be safe. Indi had to be able to tell him he loved him—should have told him a damn long time ago. Indi heard the heavy door open and his plummeted because there was no Clay or Levi rushing out. Just silence.
“What the hell are you two doing?” Hollister hissed angrily. “We just rescued your asses and you both are propped up against the wall like you don’t have a fucking worry in the fucking world? Do you have any idea what we went through? You two pussies let yourselves get kidnapped and we saved the day!”
