“Daddy got magic?” Paxton asked me it like he was wondering if I was going to the grocery store later and didn’t seem worried one way or the other.
“Yes. A tiny, tiny bit.” That got me a cute head tilt, so I gave him a kiss and kept washing lower until I had to crouch down in front of my naked cutie. “I can make you not see me. It’s more like the natural camouflage you thought your bugs had. Your eyes will just skim over me most of the time. Theoretically, I should be able to learn more active magic, but I never really thought about doing that.”
“Work.” Head bobbing side to side, Paxton was patient while I finished scrubbing his legs and rose again. “Lots and lots and lots of work.”
I had to laugh. “Yeah, I was kind of a lazy kid when it came to anything that sounded like work. All I wanted to do was to go out into the woods, so maybe that was why the camouflage thing was the only part of the magic that really stuck? My grandmother tried to teach me, but I was a pain in the ass.”
Paxton shrugged and turned around slowly as I moved him. “That was what you wanted. The beetles want to escape. The bakery man wants to have fluffy muffins. The men want to be sneaky.”
Chuckling, I washed his back. “Oh yes, we have a tendency to just use the magic on what we want right in front of us and are very narrowly focused about it.”
Kissing the back of his head as I got the rest of him clean, making sure to get under his arms and between his cheeks, I turned him around again. “We’ll have to see what other areas that have dragons and mages are doing with the magic. Someone has to be using it for more productive things than making flowers bloom out of season.”
Paxton scrunched his face up like he hadn’t thought of that before. “And my bugs, Daddy.”
“Oh yes, that has mage shenanigans written all over it.” And that was going to get us in trouble if we weren’t careful. “We’re going to have to talk to Boyd about that and make him take it to the council. I don’t have any desire to mess with the politics of magic.”
That got a giggle from Paxton. “That’s always naughty, Daddy.”
“Always.” It seemed like he agreed based on the happy sound he made. “Do you have funny stories about naughty politicians?”
Based on how much he’d traveled, I wasn’t surprised when he nodded. “You’re going to have to tell me some good stories when I make you a snack. How does that sound?”
He gave me another enthusiastic agreement but also held out his cup. “All gone.”
Since that seemed to be the most pressing thing on his mind, I took it seriously. “Well, you’re all clean, so let’s get more.”
“Yes.” Frowning at his cup, he sighed. “More and more Daddy stories.”
“Daddy stories, huh?” Shifting us so that I was under the spray since he was clean, I frowned and sighed. “I don’t know if I have stories. Our town is so boring and no one is interesting.”
That got a giggle from Paxton as he licked the top of his sippy cup and started working it like it was a tempting erection.
Distracting as fuck.
“Yes. I’ve got stories, but have you heard of the wedding that’s being planned?” That was stupidly funny.
Paxton’s eyes widened and he shook his head. “No.”
“Everyone is planning the wedding for Alick and his mate, but I’m not sure Alick knows this.” That got more giggles from my silly cutie. “Yep. They’re being sneaky and I might have to warn Alick when I take him and his Daddy out on a hike later this week.”
Kissing my cheek, Paxton nodded. “Yes. That’s…that’s not a good surprise, Daddy.”
“I would have to agree.” Shaking my head as I quickly scrubbed my chest, I sighed. “I’m hoping that they’re playing dumb and don’t realize the VFW Hall has already been rented out for their wedding, but I’m starting to worry that they actually don’t know.”
Eyes going wide, Paxton huffed. “Naughty men.”
“Oh yeah.” And their wives weren’t any better. “So we might have to save Alick and his Daddy.”
“Mates?” Cocking his head as he licked the opening of the sippy cup again, Paxton seemed to realize I needed more information. “Regular mates get married too?”
Regular meaning both knew about dragons and stuff going into it? There might’ve been more context behind the question but I took it at face value.
“Yes. Most of the time.” I gave him a kiss on the nose as he started to think. “But don’t worry. I’m going to take you on at least two outside in public dates before we start planning our wedding. That way you have stuff to tell your family.”
