“I’m out. I’ve never made who I am a secret.” Who the fuck did this guy think he was?
“No, I guess you haven’t, but… Actually, let’s not get into that right now. I’d like to go to lunch with you and your boyfriend, if you’d be willing. We can discuss everything then.”
“I’m not sure there’s anything to discuss. I have no interest in participating in any article that makes my sexuality the focus.”
“It won’t be the focus. Just, meet me. Hear me out before you make a decision. A lot of good can come from this.”
I groaned, went to rub my hand over my face, but my arm was in a stupid fucking sling and I couldn’t.
“One hour. That’s all the time I’ll give you.”
“That’s all I need.”
CHAPTER NINE
Lincoln
Lincoln says he’s never had a boyfriend. I hope to have lots of them in my life. ~ Trey
It didn’t escape my attention that Rush and I still hadn’t figured out what in the hell was going on with our relationship…well, the fact that we weren’t in one, but some people thought we were, and he actually wanted to be. And okay, maybe I was sort of curious as well.
He was Rush Alexander, after all…my friend…sexy as hell…nice guy…and sweet Gay Jesus, did he know how to dick me down. Oops. I probably shouldn’t have used Jesus’s name in that sentence, but I’d never claimed to be a good boy. Well, unless Rush was telling me I was while he was fucking me. Damn it. Were we back to sex and Rush again?
I’d basically spent the last couple of days trying to ignore this thing with Rush while at the same time trying to figure it out. It wasn’t easy both ignoring and obsessing about something, but somehow I managed.
I’d just finished my shift at the hospital, cleaned up, and was heading to pediatrics to see Trey. Between busy schedules at work and the time I spent at the hospital with Rush, it had been a while since I’d seen him.
I tapped on the door. “Knock, knock. It’s me! Your friendly neighborhood gay, corrupting young minds everywhere!”
Trey laughed. He had his oxygen on this time and his laptop on his lap again. His brown eyes sparkled when he looked at me, and I wondered if he knew I felt that same way inside when I saw him. He felt like the family I never had, the little brother I never had, and I so wished his teenage years could be easier than mine had been. Instead, they were harder.
“You don’t corrupt anything.”
“Well, good to see I have you fooled.” I sat on his bed. “Are you working on your memoir?” The kid was fucking awesome. He’d struggled all his life, his mother had left him, he was teased at school, and then he got cancer, and he was writing a memoir? I wouldn’t have had enough fight in me to do that.
“I’m playing around. It’s not like it’ll ever go anywhere.”
“And how do you know it won’t go anywhere? Positive thinking! I don’t believe there’s anything you can’t do.”
He glanced down, his light-brown cheeks pinkening. “Thanks, Linc.”
“I only speak the truth…and speaking of the truth…your nail polish could use some work. It’s peeling. Next time I’ll try and find some stuff that lasts longer. When you’re well, we can go to the salon and get a gel manicure. Those last for a couple of weeks.”
“Really?”
“Of course.”
“How’s Rush doing? I saw his race. I still can’t believe you’re friends with a dirt bike racer…not that I know much about racing dirt bikes, but it’s still cool.”
“Oh my God, right? He starts talking bikes and my brain turns off.” I shook my head. “He had surgery. He’s out for about eight weeks. There’s a chance he could go back for the last couple of supercross races, but obviously his season is shot. Motocross starts after that, which is outdoors and not in a stadium. I’m assuming he’ll let his body heal and skip it this year.”
“I bet he’s upset.”
Yes, yes, he was. Not that he would admit it. “He has to be, but he’s one of those guys who plays it off like nothing’s wrong when really you know he’s upset. Rush has a habit of trying to take care of everyone and everything. He’s like Mary Poppins—absolutely perfect in every way!”
“Oh my God! You like him!” Trey said, and I almost swallowed my tongue. Obviously, I hadn’t shared with him that I had a problem with falling into bed with Rush Alexander. I wasn’t going to really corrupt him.
“Bite your tongue! He’s a friend, and that’s all.” A friend I happened to like. Ugh. Why did Rush make me feel things? “I told you, I’m not really looking to ever get serious with anyone.” It was safer that way.
