I’m back to work now, and she’s roaming the house alone. My father hasn’t come to see me yet. He only just returned to the States yesterday after dealing with the bitch. He met with his lawyers the first thing when he got back, so he needs some time to cope with everything and I understand. However, I still haven’t talked to Summer about their relationship. How much did she know about her mother’s lies when it came to my father?
Needing to check up on her, I called Sloane who I told to stay back and keep an eye on her instead of taking me in. I usually don’t have a security team, but it’s time that I got one because there is no way I’m leaving her unprotected, and due to my position as a real estate mogul, crazies can easily come out of the woodwork.
“Drake, she’s fine. I’ve checked on her several times, and she’s alone at the house.”
“That’s the problem. What if Summer is bored and wants to leave?”
“You should just take the time off and spend it with her.”
“I should just work out of my home office for the next few days. Maybe that’s the best idea.” I’m not sure why I didn’t bother working from home in the first place. Then I remembered it was because initially, I scheduled eight meetings in a row to escape the sight of Summer, but now, I can’t get enough of her presence.
“I’m going home now.”
When I arrive back at the estate, her old security guard is there, trying to speak to Summer, but Sloane won’t let him past the front gate. I pull my vehicle to a stop and hop out to see what his deal is. “Is there a problem?”
“No, he was just leaving,” Sloane says, glaring at the brute who doesn’t move an inch.
“You’re holding her against her will,” he tells me.
“The hell I am.”
“She’s only with you because you’re better than being homeless. She doesn’t want anything other than someone to pay her bills. She loves me.” Lord, my woman has captivated every fool she comes across.
“Sloane, do you have feelings for my girl too?”
“No.” His indignant tone confirms his negative response. I don’t have to worry about him, but this motherfucker just sent doubt barreling into my gut.
“Look, I don’t have time for your shit. I didn’t leave work early only to waste my day dealing with you. My woman wouldn’t leave me again.”
“Then why did she call me?” He turned his phone toward me, and there was a call from her about an hour ago. I’m on my phone right away, calling her cell phone.
I wasn’t born yesterday and if he believes that I’ll fall for that without more proof, then he has another thing coming. He can think whatever he wants, but it isn’t just a place to stay. My woman craves me. When I left this morning, the longing and desperation in her eyes were visible. It’s one of the many reasons I had to come home as fast as I could, and I’m grateful I did. “Summer, your bodyguard is here to pick you up.”
“That’s what he said when he texted me, but I thought you didn’t want him near me. Why would you send him? Are you breaking up with me?” The heartache in her voice sends me over the edge. My fist lands so fast on the asshole’s face, sending him to the ground.
“Get rid of him. I need to see my woman and if he doesn’t leave, call my buddies on the force.”
“Damn, you better marry this woman soon before anyone else tries to stake claim to her.”
“I know. Fucking hell, but first, I have to fix what I messed up.”
I jump back in my car and speed to the front of the house, park, and then race up the steps. The second I’m inside, I see her bringing down her suitcase. I yank it from her arms. “Baby, you ain’t going, anyway. I don’t want to see those things unless we’re going on vacation. I only called because that bastard was outside saying you called him first, saying you were being held against your will.”
“But I didn’t…” She goes to pull out her phone to show me, but I press my hand to hers and stop her.
“I believe you. I love you, Summer, and I knew you didn’t want to run away with your old bodyguard because you could have before we even met.”
“There’s something I have to confess.”
“What is it?”
“There’s a reason I didn’t tell your father about my mother’s lies sooner.” I wait for her to tell me, but she pauses, twisting out of my arms and pacing the foyer. She bites down on her bottom lip.
“Babe, just tell me.”
“At first, I wanted to tell him to run as fast as he could away from her, but then he showed me a picture of you and well, I couldn’t wait to meet you, be close to you.”
