So far, it’s nothing that my wife claims she can’t handle.
And knowing Remy, she believes there are very few things in her world that she can’t manage on her own.
But she has reassured me – more than once – that if it reaches a point where the individual is an actual threat instead of a small annoyance, she will work with the Syndicate to make the problem disappear.
It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve collaborated to solve an issue.
Nor would it be the last.
As for now?
Moya zhena has declared to let the eager badge flasher and his team have their amusement the same way she insists I let Vlad play with his peas at dinner.
I want to remind her that ends in a mess.
I do not wish the same for this.
Quietly humming to myself occurs prior to stating, “Understood.”
“You may come across a few red snappers in their typical territories but nothing to be overly excited about.”
Ah.
Taking our secondary route will be the safer choice.
“Thank you, Rowan. Your sovety po rybalke is appreciated.”
“Of course, sir. It’s my job to study the water…among other things.”
His choice in using fishing code with me was Remy’s suggestion. Being somewhat uneducated about the creatures would allow me the opportunity to say whatever I want or give whatever orders I deem necessary to one of the most important people in her world without her direct knowledge. It was her way of proving I really do have all of her trust.
Trust, which even after all these years, I know is more valuable to her than love.
Yet I do believe the words have reached a rather interchangeable meaning between us.
His particular phrasing stops me from taking another step. “You have…other fishing discoveries you want to discuss?”
“Um…maybe?” The pause delivered is longer than expected. “I…” Another round of hesitation wedges itself between sentences. “I was recently doing a bit of big game fishing like Madam requested, had mainly been throwing back a bunch of tuna, but caught something a little bit ago, I think she might wanna see.”
Information about the situation at the charity.
Information I’m sure she wants.
Is anxious to have.
Rowan’s produced nothing new for far too long, something that has been making my wife…moody to gentlemanly put it.
I’d never call her bitchy.
The last delivery boy who made that mistake took a bullet to the brain before she drew the word on his lifeless body with purple lipstick.
She was trying a new color for our daughter that day.
I motion my head for Lavoie to get moving towards the transport truck. “Is…big fish or small?”
“Depends on who you’re asking.”
“Ty. I am asking you.”
“If I’m using Kelvin Montgomery’s Sleep with the Fishes guide, I’d categorize it as right on the edge of large.” Faint click clacking begins again in the background. “I mean…there is a possibility I’m being a bit overzealous. That there’s more to the antimony than I’m familiar with. Maybe extra fins or a second liver I’m not aware it has.” His reluctance to proceed is yet again undeniably felt. “You know I could just hang out in the boat for a while? Keep it alive in the water cooler until Madam has a chance to respond? Maybe that’s best?”
“Net.” The two-finger wave to the truck driver, Emilio Rivera, is delivered in tandem with my demand to Rowan. “Catch for display.”
“But-”
“Is order.”
“But-”
“Kessler is my name, da?”
“Yes, but-”
“Then you do as you are told.”
Hesitation is no longer prevalent in his response. “Yes, sir.”
The returning of Lavoie’s device is delivered upon our arrival at the back of the transport vehicle where Emilio injects the waiting prisoner in the neck while Kash’s team member continues to secure him. In less than a minute, the bank thief goes from standing to deadweight, and afterward, getting him into the back of the truck is swiftly done. The container he’s carefully placed in has the appearance of three giant brown boxes of cleaning supplies simply placed side by side, almost like a magician’s box. It isn’t hard to keep up the illusion that there’s nothing else inside by camouflaging it among actual sanitation materials. Wedging crates of pest killers and the latest models of wet vacs near it only further deters interest to the area.
This transportation change was actually a collaboration between me and Remy.
It's not how I was transported.
Puppet was never very careful.
Or cautious.
He…always had a way of making my wife’s existence more difficult.
Complicated.
Added burdens instead of blessings.
I pride myself in being better.
Better each and every opportunity given to me.
Like just now with the charity situation.
She’ll be pleased that I assisted with handling Rowan, which will allow her to focus on other things such as expanding Hugs & Kesses into the Hawaiian tourist market.
Yes.
Perhaps she’ll even be proud.
At least I know she won’t be disappointed by my choice of actions.
Disappointing her isn’t something I’ve ever found acceptable.
