Would they be able to save Yichen?
Was it too late to save their brother?
If Yichen was dead, would they go to war with the fae, destroying their clan?
Would a fight with the fae lead to problems with the local ruling vampire clan?
They were all questions with no answers. At least not until Moving Day arrived.
Tonight was different.
Every time he attempted to clear his mind and find some shred of inner peace, Moon danced across his brain with his wide grin and soft amber eyes.
The man was ridiculous. Absolutely mad. There wasn’t a single serious bone in his body. He was loud and annoying and…and…and… Why can’t I stop thinking about him?
Well, he wasn’t a total waste. He had attempted to protect him from Shixiong’s ire when Chen had revealed his stupid actions.
And he seemed determined to help their clan, though Chen couldn’t even surmise what his reasons might be.
It certainly couldn’t be because Moon was telling the truth about his attraction. That was asinine. He was not sexy. Zhang Xiao Dan possessed a mature, regal appearance. Even though he’d never say this to his face, Xiang had a sleek, athletic magnetism. Jun-Jun and Yichen were elegantly beautiful, worthy of glossy magazine pictures. Even his sisters were delicate beauty personified.
But he was…harsh and angular. Stiff and reserved. Before fate had gifted him with his vampiric powers, Xiang had taken great pleasure in informing him that he possessed all the warmth of a snowman. Maybe that was why he could control ice and snow. He’d been born with his heart already frozen.
Sighing in irritation at the direction of his thoughts, Chen bowed to Shifu again. “Forgive me, Shifu. I shame you by forgetting all your lessons on achieving a peaceful mind.”
“Would you teach me some of your language? It sounds so amazing when you speak,” Moon asked as Chen closed his eyes.
With a growl, Chen was on his feet in a flash and lunging for Moon. But unlike Xiang, the witch couldn’t move nearly fast enough to escape him. Moon retreated two steps, his eyes widening as Chen grabbed him by the throat and slammed him against the nearest wall.
“You are to never enter that room,” he snarled. He pressed close enough that he could feel Moon’s hot, frantic breath caress his face. “The Ancestral Hall is the most sacred room of our clan, and no outsider is allowed within it. Do you understand me?”
Moon’s hand shot up and gripped Chen’s wrist but didn’t try to pull free. He stood there, absorbing all of Chen’s rage as if it were simply his due. Only when Moon managed a small nod did Chen release him and take a step away.
Leaning on the wall, Moon rubbed his neck, watching Chen with a curious look. “I apologize. I didn’t realize the importance of the room, and I promise to not go in there without the clan’s permission.”
His earnest words hit Chen in the center of his chest. Okay, so maybe the witch could be serious.
Chen cleared his throat and nodded, his gaze darting away, no longer able to hold Moon’s. “Thank you,” he mumbled.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Moon push off the wall and take a step closer. “You know, I’ve been wondering…”
Chen lifted his head to ask what Moon wondered about and the witch snatched his glasses right off his face. Chen gasped and Moon cackled as he danced away, placing the glasses on his own face.
“You’re the first vampire I’ve ever seen in glasses. I thought vampirism cured things like nearsightedness.”
“I’m not nearsighted.” Chen reached out, trying to steal his glasses back, but the damn man spun away from him, giggling. “I wear them as a type of disguise. People don’t expect a vampire to wear glasses. The lenses are simple glass, not prescription.”
Moon removed the glasses and cocked his head to the side, his eyes narrowing on Chen’s face as if he were inspecting it. “Huh.”
“What?” Chen barely resisted the urge to lift his hand to his face, feeling for whatever Moon saw there. Or maybe it was his hair. Had it gotten mussed from chasing after the man?
“It’s not fair.”
“What’s not fair?”
A slow smile spread across Moon’s pink lips. “You’re just as hot without glasses as you are in glasses.”
Chen huffed and snatched his glasses from Moon’s fingers while ignoring the burning in the tips of his ears. “You may stop with your nonsense now. You’re here. There’s no point to this flirting. No one believes you.” He shoved them on and looked at Moon to find that the witch had taken a step closer. Chen retreated but stopped when his shoulders hit the wall of the corridor.
“I don’t care about anyone else believing me.” Moon reached up and lightly gripped Chen’s jaw with his thumb and forefinger. “The only thing that matters is that you believe me when I say that you are unbelievably sexy.”
