“What’s going on?” Skye asked.
She looked terrified.
“We’ve got to stay here for a couple of minutes,” Galen said.
Skye looked around. “Are they dead?”
He looked at her and she chuckled. “Right, yes, right, of course. Ignore me. I don’t know why I would ask such a stupid question, and it was stupid, right?”
She was nervous. The wait felt like it would never end.
“It shouldn’t be long,” he said.
As if on cue, he spotted the van. He didn’t need to talk to the cleanup crew, just a simple nod from the leader, and he climbed into his car and drove off.
“What just happened?” Skye asked.
“Nothing for you to worry about.”
“It’s like you’re some kind of super-secret society or something.”
He couldn’t help but chuckle. They were a secret group of assassins and hit men. They were hired to do the jobs no one else wanted. There was nothing bright or colorful about their work.
“So, what happens now?” Skye asked.
“Now we sit back and wait.”
“Why?”
“We don’t know if those men contacted Petrov with your location.” He tensed up, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. Galen knew it was unavoidable. He was going to have to call Viko. That would not go well.
He circled his safe house multiple times, before finally driving through. Galen checked the perimeter, making sure there was no weakness in his security. With Skye, he had to double his efforts to be safe. He didn’t want anything to happen to her.
Arriving at his underground garage, he climbed out of the car and rounded the vehicle, reaching for her. He took her hand and led the way into his main house. Each door he went through, he put the codes in, and then let Skye go.
“Galen, are we in danger?” she asked.
“No, we’re not.” Nothing could happen to this woman, and that alone scared the shit out of him.
There had been times over the years he may have been sloppy when it came to his own personal safety. He loved the challenge, taking on his opposition, but not with Skye. The risk to her life was not a chance he wanted to play with. He’d become his own worst enemy and his rivals would love to know about his new weakness.
“Go and shower or something. I’ve got to talk to Viko.”
“Galen?”
He’d already turned away from her and as he looked back at her, he saw once again that the smile didn’t match her eyes.
“Well, apart from the last couple of minutes with those guys shooting at us, I had a good time.”
“Me too.”
Skye stepped up to him, put her hand on his chest, and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Thank you.”
He had no words and watched her leave. Galen wanted to call her back, to kiss her, but he knew he had to contact Viko. There was no time to wait.
The chance of Viko answering was a long shot. He waited until he was alone and then dialed. The call rang and rang. Viko was not known for taking voice messages. Galen was just about to hang up, when the call finally connected.
“Well, someone has had an interesting night,” Viko said.

Skye climbed into the shower and tilted her head back, closing her eyes. “Kissing his cheek? Why did you kiss his cheek? Who would kiss a cheek on a date?” She couldn’t believe she’d done that. Of all the things she could have said and done, that had to be the lamest choice.
Spinning around in the shower so that the water cascaded down her back, she opened her eyes.
She knew she should take a moment to think about the two men who’d lost their lives, but it was quite easy not to. They were going to kill her and Galen. She hated thinking of the world as dog eat dog, but with each day that passed, she was starting to realize the truth of that statement.
Galen had once again saved her. And their date, apart from when he’d admitted he was tempted to leave her, had been great. Not that she had many dates to compare it to.
She reached for the shampoo, applying a generous amount in her palm, and then rubbed it into her hair and scalp. Rinsing out the shampoo, she grabbed the conditioner, doing the same, and then lathered her body with soap, trying not to think about Galen as she did this. His hands were a lot bigger than hers, and she loved it when he touched her. All he’d done was put a gentle hand at her back, but it had been enough. That possessive claim made her pussy tingle in crazy ways. Skye wanted to feel his hands all over her naked body, touching her.
Pushing those thoughts to the back of her mind, she turned the shower off, grabbed a towel, and then climbed out.
