Me: Thanks for today, it was a lot of fun.

I put the phone next to me and turn off the lights. And I wait for his reply, but there isn’t any, and the next day when I’m getting ready for lunch with Karrie, there is a knock on my door. I walk to it with my kimono flowing around my legs, and I find one of the bellboys holding a box for me.

“This came for you,” he says and hands me the white box. Grabbing it, I walk to the kitchen. I pull on the white satin bow on top of it, and it falls to the side. Lifting the top, I see a white card sitting on top of silk.

Here is a little bit of some words to go with your Kama Sutra.

Mark

I laugh and put the card down and when I lift the silk, I come face-to-face with four books with brown covers on them. I pick them up and turn to see the gold writing on the spine of the book.

Pride and Prejudice. I gasp, opening the book and seeing the pages are yellow and old. The next book is Sense and Sensibility. I stand here wondering how he even got these, and I look down, thinking this has to be the most thoughtful gift anyone has ever gotten me. I don’t move from my spot when I hear my door open and then hear clicking of heels.

“Vivi!” Karrie yells. “I’m here,” she says and then stops walking when she sees me. “Hey.” She smiles and comes into the kitchen. “What do you have there?”

“Jane Austen books,” I say softly.

“Aww, your favorite,” she says. “Didn’t you read this one every single week for five years?”

“It’s a classic,” I say, looking at her and taking the book out of her hand.

“Holy shit, did Mark send those to you?” she shrieks when she picks up the card.

“Yeah,” I say and then turn to her. “We went to the library yesterday, and he asked me what my favorite book was.”

“That is so sweet,” she says with hearts in her eyes, and I shake my head.

“I told him Kama Sutra,” I tell her and rub my face with my hands while she laughs.

“Matthew and I bought that for me one year, and he wanted to do a position a day.” I look at her, and my mouth hangs open. “I was all for it until he wanted to do a handstand against the wall so I could suck his dick.” I laugh now, putting my hand over my mouth. “It’s all fun and games until you get hit in the eye with his knee cap.” She shakes her head. “It was not pretty.”

“Oh my God,” I say, and then I look at her. “I think I like him.”

“No shit,” she says and then walks over to the cabinet and comes back with tequila. After pouring two shots, she tells me to drink.

“I like him, Karrie,” I whisper to her and take a shot, the liquid burning all the way down. “Like, like him.”

“There is nothing wrong with that,” she tells me, and I look at her.

“Everything is wrong with that!” I shout. “I don’t want to like him. I don’t want to have that feeling and then be let down when he leaves.”

“What if he doesn’t leave?” she asks me, and I take the second shot she poured. I take it and don’t answer the question.

“I can’t be friends with him,” I tell her. “I thought I could, but I can’t.”

“You kept the fish.” She gasps. “Oh my God.”

“I don’t think he wants it,” I tell her and then pour myself another shot. “He hasn’t asked about Elsa once.”

“You named the fish Elsa?” She holds her stomach while she laughs.

“I’m going to put an ad in the paper looking for a new friend,” I tell her, and she laughs even harder, but I just shake my head. Instead of going out, I have food delivered. She doesn’t bring up Mark again, and when she leaves with kisses and hugs, I send him a thank-you text.

Me: Thank you for the books. I didn’t know books came without pictures! Mind blown.

He doesn’t answer me, and I put the phone down. I think about that last time we were together, in the shower at my house, and I walk to my bedroom and take out my treasure chest that I keep. A woman can never have enough toys. I put the box on the bed and take out my purple trusted friend. I have been around the block a time or two with this one. I lie on the bed and close my eyes, seeing Mark in my head. His body, his arms, his fingers, his cock. I’m so turned on my nipples ache. I play with myself over and over again, but I never, ever get my happy ending. Maybe I need to relax, I think to myself, so I start a bath and bring my waterproof toy with me. The warm water makes me relax, but I just can’t get myself there. I grab my iPad and put on porn and nothing. I spend the whole night playing with myself to the point of exhaustion, and the next day, I call Karrie crying.
