“Yes, I think I’ll come with you, but not to Capitol City,” she informed me. “I’ll see if Leeta or someone has work in that town. I think I’ll stay in Freemont and work for room and board until I know a good place to hide from the king.”
I laughed, unable to hold it in. Her audacity tickled me.
She still thinks what we have between us can be forgotten or put aside.
“What’s so funny?” She pouted and poked that luscious bottom lip out.
I moved to her and sucked on it, letting my tongue trace its outline.
I delivered my answer to her head. You’ll stay with me, my queen.
“I won’t. But we can spend time together every now and then.” Her heart pounded wildly in her chest like a ritual drumbeat. Her blood sang to me, threatening to pull me under its intoxicating spell yet again.
I swayed and almost drowned in that hypnotic tune.
I mentally replied. We’ll be doing more than spending time together.
Camille shuddered.
I spread her legs apart and toyed with the plump bud between her thighs. My mouth watered as she moaned. I needed to circle her clit with my tongue and tenderly tug on it until she screamed my name.
She whispered, “I’m already too sore.”
My fangs burst through my gums. “Should I kiss your soreness away?”
The tent instantly filled with the scent of her arousal. I journeyed down to her thighs.
“Yes,” she mumbled as her legs opened wider.
I stuck my tongue out and slowly explored her, enjoying the taste. She cried out in delight. Her body writhed under my mouth. I gripped the head of my cock and imagined it was inside of her slick tunnel.
We’ll spend time together every now and then, she’d said. Never! I want all of her time and nothing less.
My tongue flickered along her opening. She rocked into my mouth. “Xander!”
“Who are you to me?” I thrust my two fingers into her deeper and deeper.
“Your queen.”
And you’ll truly realize that soon enough.
Chapter 14
The Return to Freemont
Camille
After two nights of journeying on horseback, we returned to Freemont only to witness a shocking sight.
Oh no!
Miles ahead of us, a mountain of fire began to swallow the human town of Freemont.
A searing sea of flames engulfed the area, its tongues of fire licking menacingly at the sky. A destructive force of nature, so powerful and deadly-looking that it seemed impossible that anyone could survive its scorching embrace.
How could this happen?
My stomach clenched with fear and I couldn’t help but shake with terror as I watched the raging inferno devour everything in sight.
Is Leeta okay?
My heart boomed in my ears.
Xander and I approached on our horse.
Please let Leeta be okay.
Xander’s hands trembled as he held onto my waist. “We should stop right outside of the gates, and then I will search for Leeta.”
What could be on Xander’s mind right now? Leeta had raised him from vampire baby to prince. He probably considered her his true mother.
The closer we came, the worse things appeared and the more I could feel the heat of the fire on my skin.
The area drowned in blistering heat and reeked of burning wood. Most buildings looked reduced to piles of ashes.
There was nothing left to do but jump off our horse, run into town, and check on Leeta.
But, when we stopped the horse at the gates and got off,
Xander handed me the reins to our horse. “Stay here. I’ll go check—”
“I’m going with you.”
“No! You could get hurt. I’ll be worried about you the whole time.”
“Then I promise to stay safe.” I quickly tied the horse to a tree and prayed it would keep him there. “I have to come and help.”
“Blasted woman,” Xander muttered under his breath.
“Stubborn prince.” I doubted the rope was tied correctly.
It didn’t matter.
I rushed off and followed Xander.
My mind concentrated on Leeta’s safety.
We rushed deeper into town.
Thick clouds of dingy smoke blocked out the two moons’ light and wrapped the town in a heavy blanket of death and gloom.
I drew my shirt over my nose to breath. It was hard to see. The insistent smoke stung my eyes.
Xander’s voice held unease. “Camille?”
“I’m right behind you.”
Black ashes sprinkled down on us like rain. A building exploded on our right. We jumped to the left. Shards of glass poured down. Thankfully, nothing cut us.
We hurried to rescue Leeta, racing through the smoky streets and bumping into people who screamed and shrieked for their loved ones.
All sought escape and yearned to survive. Frightened children clutched their crying mothers with panicked grips. Animals scattered to safety—from striped horses that trotted after owners, to silver wombats that burst out of the attics of homes.
My heart pounded relentlessly.
So many faces, young and old, but I never saw Leeta within this mass of hysteria. Dread filled me. I feared for her and Xander with each step.
