I didn’t know too much about their past in law enforcement. My knowledge of them stemmed more from their dealings as businessmen. But I wonder if that past had anything to do with why they were targeted by the same woman and if so what the fuck did it have to do with me.

As far as I can tell, I was a mere boy when those two were in the courtroom and I’ve never had any run-ins with either of them since I tended to steer clear of the law in my youth. I’d always known my only way out was to keep a clean nose and stay in the books and on my toes. I’d worked too damn hard to squander my life away on some petty crime bullshit that would’ve been a blight on my character, and for damn sure would’ve closed a lot of doors in my face.

This was the south and down here even if you’re not born with a silver spoon in your mouth, there’re still ways of getting your foot in the door. Mine had been football, but that’s another story.

My man in the field didn’t have much to report when I checked in, but I didn’t fool myself into thinking that things with Jen were over. Obviously, she’d been after something and even though she’d been found out, there was nothing stopping her from trying again. Who knows how her mind works. She could very well believe in her own power of persuasion.

I had to rush to pick my girl up at end of day since I got caught up in business and lost track of time. She was waiting in front of the campus surrounded by a group of young kids and I watched her for a minute before letting her know I was there.

She seemed so young in this environment. The way she talks, the way she takes me, it’s sometimes hard to remember the difference in our ages. But seeing her here with the fading sunlight behind her, highlighting those jet-black locks of hers, books clutched in her arms and a backpack flung across her shoulder, it was like a jolt to the system.

She finally turned in my direction and with a quick wave to her friends headed towards me. She showed no hesitation as she got in and leaned over for a kiss. “You’re late.” She teased.

“Sorry sweetheart, I fell a little behind since someone who shall remain nameless interrupted my day most delightfully.”

“Are you complaining?”

“Nope! You can interrupt me anytime you want. Did you need to go anywhere before we head home love?”

“Nope, Martha promised to show me how to make your favorite dish.”

She’s such a surprising mix of wanton and housewife. When she isn’t trying to fuck me to within an inch of my life, she’s playing house. She takes care of me without seeming to, but I notice every little detail. Like the way she puts my clothes away even though we have servants who take care of such things. Or the way she worries if I’m working too hard.

In just a few short weeks she’s fit herself so neatly into my life that it’s hard to remember a time when she wasn’t there. “Martha’s worried you’re going to beat her out of a job sweetheart.”

“No she’s not, we have an agreement. Besides I’m a long way from being the kind of cook she is and she promised to teach me.”

“Okay, as long as there’re no hard feelings. If things change you’ll let me know won’t you?”

“Of course, now stop worrying. Martha knows I’m no threat…” She broke off her sentence and her head swiveled around quickly.

“What is it?” I looked in the rearview to see what it was that had caught her attention.

“Nothing, I must be mistaken.” She didn’t look like she believed her own words so I pressed her.

“What was it that you thought you saw?”

“Jen. I thought I saw her following us.”

I didn’t let on that her words made my blood run cold, but instead played it cool. With my eyes on the mirror checking the cars behind me, I kept a steady speed as I thought of ways to out maneuver her if she tried anything.

There was no point in evading since she knew where my home was and I wasn’t sure I wanted her to know that we were onto her. “Relax sweetheart, just look straight ahead.” She fidgeted around in her seat but I could tell her playful mood was gone.

Reaching over, I took her hand in mine and ran my thumb over her fingers soothingly. “She can’t hurt you baby, I won’t let her. You have nothing to worry about remember?”

She nodded yes, but I could tell she was fighting the urge to look back.

I changed the subject, hitting on the one thing I was sure would get her mind off of her aunt. “So, how are the wedding plans coming along? Have you had anytime to think of what you want yet?” I kept a watchful eye and saw when the car that had been tailing us two cars back veered off. I couldn’t make out the driver.
