Another gasp of pleasure escaped her lips and when he slipped a finger inside her, she gasped louder.

She groaned, her passion building far too fast. “I will not last if you continue to pleasure me like that.”

“Good. I want you to come like this and then I am going to toss you down on the bed and make you come again.”

His words fired her desire along with his fingers as they teased, delved, and worked magic on her until, unable to stop it, her passion suddenly burst, and she cried out in release.

Still reeling from her climax, Cavell did as he said. He tossed her down on the bed, knelt between her legs, placing them over his shoulders, grabbed her by her bottom to lift her just enough to sink his rock-hard shaft deep into her wet sheath and had her crying out in pleasure.

He needed this, had needed it since the battle had ended. He needed to sink deep into her, feel her come alive to his touch, feel her love, and blend as one, always together as one.

He loved how she instinctively responded to the rhythm he set for them and at times demanded more from him like now. She could not get enough of him, nor could he get enough of her. She had woken something buried in him and he never felt as alive as he did with her when they made love.

He enjoyed watching his shaft penetrate her repeatedly, loved hearing her moan with pleasure, seeing the way her hands madly gripped the bedding, but most of all he loved looking into her soft blue eyes and seeing them hot with passion for him.

“Cavell!” she called out, desperately.

He kept firm hold of her backside as he quickened his pace, and it wasn’t long before their passion exploded simultaneously as did their roars of pleasure that filled their bedchamber longer than usual.

Cavell reached for her hand when they finally lay side by side and wasn’t surprised to find she was reaching for his. Marriage may have brought them together, but love was what joined them as one forever and the way their hands constantly sought each other’s proved they never wanted to be parted.

“I love you, Elsie,” he said, turning on his side to face her.

Elsie turned, her hand going to his face to stroke it gently. “Not as much as I love you.”

“That is debatable,” he argued playfully.

“What isn’t debatable is that we love each other and that is all that matters.”

“On that we agree,” he said and kissed the palm of her hand.

He tucked her against him after pulling a blanket over them. No talk was needed, nor did Cavell want to talk, and he was glad his wife did not want to talk either. Right now, all both wanted was the comfort of each other’s arms, and, to no surprise to Cavell, the exhausting day soon claimed them both in sleep.

Elsie sat beside her da’s bed worried. Ever since the attack two days ago that her da had tried to participate in, he had lost strength and continued to do so.

“I am sorry, Elsie,” her da said tearfully.

She took his hand. It barely had any strength to it. “Nonsense, Da, you have no reason to be sorry.”

“I should have been stronger, protected you lasses better and now it’s too late.” A tear ran down his cheek.

“You did protect us,” Elsie argued. “You wed me and Leora to strong warriors and Sky is safe being the widow of Slayer’s brother. Worry not, Da, all will be well.”

Her da tried to grip her hand but he was barely able to close his hand around hers. “Leave the past in the past. Don’t open what should remain closed… forever.” He closed his eyes. “I am tired, Elsie.”

“Sleep, rest, and grow strong, Da,” she said, placing his hand on his chest and pulling the blanket over it.

His eyes opened suddenly. “I love you and your sisters, Elsie, always remember that.”

“And we love you, Da, and always will,” Elsie said, feeling as if he needed to remind her one last time. She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up to see Ann.

“I will sit with him, Mistress Elsie.”

A terrible fear that she would lose her da descended over her as she left the room reluctantly. She didn’t want anyone to see her upset, so she hurried through the keep and outside. A chilled breeze rushed to embrace her but felt more like cold arms wrapping around her and she shivered. The somber, gray clouds overhead didn’t help any. It was as though nature itself predicted doom.

“What’s wrong?”

Elsie hadn’t noticed she had stopped just before entering the village and was hugging herself, and she hadn’t realized it was her husband who had spoken to her and when she did see it was him, she ran to him.
