I wrapped my arm around Devyn and pulled her close. “We’re having a baby.”
“Remind me to stay out of the water, then.” Brayden laughed, but his face turned serious when it hit. “Wait, really? She’s pregnant?”
“Yeah, dude.”
He looked between us. “How long have you known about this?”
“Fully? Just the past ten minutes or so,” I said.
“Is this good news?” he asked.
“Yes. We’re happy.” Devyn smiled.
“So happy.” I kissed her on the forehead. “The best accident ever.”
“Congratulations, then.” He hugged us both. “You sure know how to shock the shit out of someone.”
“You’d better get to work, Brayden.” I patted him on the back. “You’re gonna be the only one of us without kids soon.”
He held his palms out. “I’m good. Happy to be the odd man out for a long while.”
Holden skidded into the open doorway. “Billie just texted me. I heard it’s yours!”
Brayden squinted. “What are you talking about…yours?”
“Don’t worry about it,” Holden said, flashing me an apologetic look.
Then Lala walked in carrying Hope. She ran right over to Devyn. “I’m so happy for you guys!”
Colby’s daughter, Saylor, came out of her room. “Why is everyone yelling?”
“Devyn and Owen are having a baby,” Colby told her.
Saylor looked up at us. “Are you guys boyfriend and girlfriend?”
“We are.” I rustled her hair.
“I didn’t know that.” She shrugged.
Devyn and I looked at each other and laughed.
Devyn moved away from me for a moment and raised her voice over the commotion of everyone’s conversation. “I just want to say something, please.”
“Shhh…” Holden waved his hand. “Let her talk.”
“Hi,” she said awkwardly once she had everyone’s attention. She fiddled with her fingers. “I just wanted to say, from the moment I came here and met all of you, I admired the close friendships you have—the family you’ve formed. Because of my background, I felt undeserving of that kind of bond. I envied you all. For the longest time, for reasons I won’t get into now, the status of Owen’s and my future together was up in the air.” She reached for my hand. “I’m so happy that I can finally see that future. And I’m even happier that it includes all of you. You’ve been nothing but kind to me from day one. I hope you have room for one more member of your crew.”
I placed my hand over her stomach. “Technically, two more members.”
“That’s true.” She laughed.
Billie blew a kiss at us. “We love you, Devyn.”
“And I just want to say,” Brayden interrupted, “from almost the moment I was attempting to steal you from Owen, Devyn, it was clear you only had eyes for him. I couldn’t be happier that my best friend finally found the woman of his dreams. He’s waited a long time for you.”
“Thank you, Brayden.” She smiled, then shivered.
We needed to get out of these wet clothes.
I grabbed her hand. “If you’ll excuse us, we both need to dry off. We’ll celebrate more later.”
As we walked out the door, Brayden called after us, “Will you tell me the name of the actor she was dating now?”
I gave him the finger—lovingly—as Devyn and I headed down the hall.

I’d given Devyn one of my T-shirts to wear after we took a hot shower together. She’d asked me to be there when she called Robert to tell him the news, so we sat next to each other on my couch as she dialed him.
She rubbed her palm along her thigh as she waited for him to pick up.
“Hey, Robert,” she finally said, taking a deep breath. “We got the results.” She paused. “The baby is Owen’s.” She exhaled and licked her lips.
I watched as Devyn blinked and nodded as she listened to whatever he was saying.
“I know,” she said. “I’m sorry to tell you over the phone like this, but there was no choice.” A few seconds went by. “He and I are going to raise the baby together. Be together. I love him, Robert.” She reached for my hand. “I really do.” She turned to me. “He wants me to put him on speaker so you can hear him.”
“Sure.” I inhaled slowly, gearing up for an uncomfortable discussion.
She placed the phone between us.
“Hey, Owen,” Robert said.
“Hey.”
“Congratulations.”
“Thank you. I appreciate that. I know this hasn’t been easy for you.”
“It hasn’t, but it is what it is. I respect you for being by her side all this time when I couldn’t.” After a moment, he said, “I haven’t always treated Devyn the way she deserved. But I love her more than anything in this world. I’ll always love her. I hope you know that, Devyn. I wish I’d known our time together before you moved to New York was our last. I would’ve appreciated it more, cherished every second. I really did think I could change for you, for this baby. And I’m not gonna lie, this hurts like hell. But I have to trust that everything is meant to be. I’m happy you’ve found someone who loves you, someone I know will make a great father.”
