“Love you, honey, and hell yes, we are.” Our mouths collide. Beau carries me to the bed, laying me down, where we make love for the rest of the day, closing out the world and being with one another.

Epilogue

Beau

Nine Months Later

“Hudson, this is what happens when you don’t wrap your dick. You find yourself wrapping a baby instead.” I’m swaddling Hudson after Lily nursed him. It’s clockwork already—eat, sleep, shit, repeat. That’s why it’s me and my boy right now. Lily is passed out asleep. It has been a rough couple of days with him home. Mainly because there’s no routine, which means hardly any sleep for both of us, and our boy is up every few hours all through the day.

“Parenting advice so soon?”

“Better to start him off now than not at all. Besides, it’s not like he won’t have two good parents. We’ll lead him down the right path and pray like hell he comes out a decent human being.” I finish tucking Hudson into his blanket like a burrito.

“I have nothing but faith. We’ll do our absolute best.”

“That we will, honey. That we will,” I reply.

“Is he starting to fall asleep?” Lily says through a yawn. She’s still just as gorgeous as the day she walked into the bar asking for me to be her fake boyfriend.

“Yeah, especially now that he’s all wrapped up, aren’t you, buddy?” I talk to my boy. There’s going to be a lot of fun to be had with him, that’s for sure. Teaching him how to ride, work with the cows, how to hold a door open for a woman. I could go on and on.

“Well, when you’re done your man-to-man talk, your parents are on their way. They didn’t care that Hudson was asleep, so I told them we’d feed them while he napped. That way, they won’t sit around twiddling their thumbs.” It wasn’t long after we found out Lily was pregnant that we had a small ceremony in our backyard, surrounded by both of our parents, Vince, Graham, and somehow, Lily roped Faith into letting Logan be our ring bearer. Though I’m not sure we needed one. Lily must have had something up her sleeve. It didn’t do much good when Faith stormed out halfway through the reception and Logan asking why, wanting to hang out with Graham instead. Who knew what Graham did to piss her off this time?

My wife. God, do I love saying that. Right now, she’s in a scoop neck T-shirt, one of my flannels on top of it, and black leggings. I don’t know why she isn’t resting.

“You could have told them no, honey. Mom would have understood.” I put Hudson in the crook of my arm, making sure his head is cradled and he can’t move.

“No way. My parents were here earlier. I wasn’t going to tell the other set no. Are you trying to get us in trouble?” she retorts with a huff of breath.

“You’re not wrong, but next time, let the phone ring. I’ll call Mom back and let her know. Now, Hudson and I are gonna hang out and watch some baseball. Do you want to join us on the couch, or are you going to take a nap in bed?” This is my way of making her get some extra sleep.

“I’ll rest on the couch. I need to call Willow at Kissme and make sure everything’s okay.” Another yawn sneaks out of her.

“I’m sure she’s fine. Stop being a mother hen,” I throw her words back at her, words she uses so often on me.

“Hmph, don’t think I didn’t feel you get out of bed to answer a call last night from the Tipsy Cow,” she throws back.

“Different hours. It was about a liquor order, and you didn’t see me making a call. I was receiving it. Come on, Lil, let’s go rest before the next batch stops by. Graham hasn’t made his presence known, and you know Faith will be by later this week. Maybe she and Logan will watch Hudson while I take a few cows to the auction, you know, so you’ll actually take a nap.” I already know what’s coming.

“We’ll see. I’m not arguing with you about needing more sleep, but I feel like I’ll miss something, not to mention it’s not like I can tell my boobs to quit producing milk. Hudson cries, they’re like ‘Hey, over here!’” She raises her arms, shaking her tits.

“You keep moving like that, and I’ll take you to bed,” I grunt.

“Not happening. I’m not healed yet, and you heard the doctor. Six weeks.” I’m not sure who’s more disappointed in that, me or her.

“Don’t you worry, there are other ways.” Hudson’s two weeks old, and we’re both counting down the weeks.

“Promises, promises, Mr. Byrd.” She turns around and walks down the hall towards the living room, leaving me and our boy behind, knowing full well we’ll follow her anywhere and everywhere.
