My stomach churned at the thought as I wrapped my hand around the lamp.

A noise distracted Trey for a second. I took my chance, but he dodged, and I only grazed his shoulder. Somehow he even managed to keep hold of his gun.

“You fucking son of a bitch.” He reached for me with his other arm, yanking me to him and jamming his gun against my temple.

The door burst open then, and Grant stepped in.

“Don’t move,” Trey yelled.

Grant had his weapon pointed at Trey’s head. He didn’t lower it, but he also didn’t move farther into the room.

I knew Grant would do anything he could to save me. A few seconds before, I’d wanted nothing more than to see him, but now I realized he’d sacrifice himself for me, and I couldn’t live with that.

“Grant, it’s okay. Just leave me with him.”

“The fuck I will. This piece of shit is going to die for what he’s done to you.”

Trey snarled. “You can’t kill me without killing him too.”

I was very afraid he was right.

GRANT

I racked my brain trying to figure out how to let Jacob know I had a plan. I needed him to move as soon as the gun wasn’t pointed at him.

“Remember what I told you, sweetheart?” I hoped like hell he’d think of the conversation where we’d talked about how to get out of a situation like this. Back then, I hoped he’d never need to use it, but now his life depended on it.

I knew he got it when his eyes widened, and he choked out a yes.

“Good.”

“Put down your fucking gun,” Trey demanded.

“No.” I had no intention of backing down.

Trey snarled, pulling Jacob tighter against him and jamming his gun against his neck. “You’re making it worse for yourself. I was just going to shoot you, but now I’m going to make you watch while I show you what this little slut needs to keep him in line.”

I growled.

“Don’t, Grant.” Jacob’s plea was the only thing that kept me from rushing him.

My mind screamed that Jacob’s life was the only thing that mattered. But if I was patient, I could get us both out of this alive, and that would be so much better.

“I love you,” Jacob mouthed.

My knees almost gave out. I nodded, not wanting to say anything Trey could decipher.

“Let Jacob go, and I’ll kill you quickly.”

Trey laughed wildly. Was he high or just insane? What was it with the unhinged today?

“Put your gun down,” I snarled.

“You just don’t know when to be quiet, do you?”

“Actually, I do. I’ll quit this when you’re good and dead, and Jacob is in my arms again.”

“No!” he shouted, pointing his weapon toward me. Jacob jerked away, and I took the shot.

Trey managed to squeeze the trigger, but his shot went wide. I kept firing until I’d emptied all my rounds into him.

“Grant! Grant, it’s okay. He’s dead.”

With as many rounds as I’d put into him, he damn well better be.

I dropped my gun, hauled Trey’s lifeless body off the floor, and kicked open the doors to the balcony, not caring that I broke the lock.

I flung Trey over the railing and watched him drop to the ground.

“Jesus,” TJ called up from the porch. “Did you have to make such a fucking mess?”

“Rogue? Where is he?” Jacob rushed to my side. “I think Trey—”

“I’m going to live,” Rogue called.

“He will,” I assured Jacob. “But he needs a doctor.”

“I’ve had worse.”

“We’ll get him to the hospital,” I promised.

“I’d call an ambulance, but there’s a fucking body in the front yard,” TJ called.

“Then clean it up.”

I realized Jacob was shaking. I scooped him into my arms and carried him back inside.

JACOB

“Did Trey hurt you?” Grant asked, sitting down and putting me on his lap.

“No. I’m fine. Trey’s really dead.” I couldn’t make my mind accept it.

Grant kissed the top of his head. “Yes, sweetheart. He’ll never touch you again.”

“You killed him for me.”

“I did.”

“I should be upset. I should… You shot him.”

The world swirled around me. Grant had shot a man for me. Over and over. I shuddered as I thought about his body lying in the grass below us.

“He was going to kill you.”

“He would have killed you too.”

“That’s why I killed him. I’m sorry I scared you. I’m sorry you had to see that. If I could take it away, I would.”

He held me tight, and I buried my face in the crook of his neck, breathing in his scent and letting it comfort me. I took a few deep breaths, then relaxed against him.

“I’m okay. I really am.” I sat up and met his eyes. “Maybe I shouldn’t be, but I’m glad he’s dead.”

“You have every right to feel that way. You’re safe now. You don’t have to worry about him anymore. You’re free. You can go wherever you want. You don’t have to stay here.”
