“Or he’ll be shredded alive.”
Taking her hand, I guided her to bed. “He’s a Mercer, Tess. We might be cursed but…if he wants love as much as I did, then…who knows? Maybe he’ll be strong enough to break that curse. Maybe I have him all wrong and he’ll succeed. Maybe someone else will be strong enough to muzzle him. Maybe he’ll destroy them or maybe he’ll destroy himself, either way…destruction is what he needs.”
“That poor man has no idea what he’s just agreed to,” she whispered sadly.
“That’s his cross to bear, not ours.” Stripping my wife, I undressed and crawled into bed with her.
As she slotted against me, skin to skin, bone to bone, I cradled her tight and made two promises.
One, I would do as Tess asked and be a little kinder toward him. If, by some miracle, he succeeded then…I would let him stay.
And two, if he failed…if he slipped into hell and drowned in the darkness that cursed us, I would put him out of his misery.
I would ensure he never saw death coming.
Because that was what brothers did.
We did what was necessary.
We did what was right.
And killing Henri Ward might be the only right thing to do.
