“I asked her if they could perhaps be quieter in the bedroom, and she patted me on the head,” says Alistair in a sorrowful tone. “Said I was old enough to understand the powerful nature of sex between new lovers. But if I wanted to discuss it further with her, she was open to having that conversation with me.”
“Thinking of taking her up on the offer?”
“I was actually considering walking into the sea, never to be seen again.”
I snort.
“It’s not funny, Leannan. She’s out of control.”
“Has she ever actually been in control?”
“No. Fair point.”
“Get back here, lass!” Dougal’s voice carries just fine in the tropical quiet. “Ye’ve work to be doing!”
“That’s it.” Alistair stops rubbing my back and reaches for his phone. “I am booking us a boat ride out of here. Mother and Dougal will just have to understand. They’ll be fine here without us. It won’t hurt to get to London ahead of schedule. Sounds like James could do with the support.”
“Whatever you say, dear.” I snap a shot of me poking my tongue out and text it to Rebecca. It’s a suitable reply to her request to be knighted. Then I slowly rise with a smile on my face. “I’ll go start packing my bag.”
Why not smile? Life is great. As much as I love being a librarian, there’s nothing like a close call with death to make you prioritize. Work can wait. For now. There’s so much to see and experience. The mystery of the missing Prince of Wales has also been solved. He and Alistair had been quietly texting for years, working on their brotherly bond. James was hiding out at a boutique hotel in Romania with a certain supermodel. Apparently, his upcoming nuptials are more in the way of a business arrangement between him and an acquaintance. Someone the king was willing to approve. Only they can decide if they’re happy to live that way.
The king has made an effort to reach out again to Alistair. To invite him to his brother’s wedding with no strings attached this time. I don’t know if they’ll ever have a real functioning relationship. But we’re going to London to visit with that side of his family. It’s a good start.
As for what comes next... We have decided to wander the world for a while. To visit all the libraries I have only read about and bask in their bookish glory. And to hit all the great surf beaches he’s been wanting to try. It’s item number one on our combined wish list. We’ll return to Los Angeles and real life and routine eventually. My family and friends are there and so are his. Our work is there. It’s our home.
Whatever we do, we’re going to make the most out of the time we have together. Whether that be one day or fifty years.
