I raise my eyebrows. “Well? Are they? Because that’s all anyone can talk about at the manor. You working with your brother.”

It’s true.

It’s a very hot topic these days.

Something moves across his features then. “You graduated.”

And I realize that that something is admiration. Happiness even.

On my behalf.

The fact that I didn’t even have to remind him about my finals and that he deduced it from my offhand comment about the manor, makes me want to smack him.

For what he did two weeks ago.

For how cruel he was when we always seem to be so in tune with each other.

As it is, all I do is lift my chin and say, “Yes, I did.”

His lips curl up into a small smile. “You’re free.”

I shake my head. “Not yet.”

That’s why I’m here, aren’t I?

To be set free.

His frown is back. This one’s even more ferocious than the last one. “What does that —”

“Where’s your tie though?” I cut him off again.

He exhales an annoyed breath, his chest undulating in his shirt.

It’s hard for him.

Having me run the conversation.

Tough luck though. This is my show tonight and he doesn’t have a choice.

“Don’t like ’em,” he replies, his reddish-brown eyes displeased and pinned on me.

“Right. Because you like to make your own rules.”

“I also like it when people call before coming over.”

“You blocked my number, remember?”

“And yet you don’t seem to get the hint.”

I drop my overnight bag on the floor. “Which is why I’ve decided to move in. I figured you wouldn’t be able to avoid me if we lived together.”

His eyes fly down to the little pink bag on the floor — I specifically chose the girliest little bag in my closet — before flying back up to my face.

And oh my God, his expression is priceless.

Even more priceless is his shocked, “The fuck?”

I wasn’t going to laugh but at the speed he went all pale, I allow myself a small smile. “I’m not here to cramp your style. So relax, would you, Bossman?”

His eyes flash and that arrogant expression is back on his face.

Pair that with his office clothes, and I realize that he looks every inch the Bossman tonight, albeit with criminal tendencies.

The second son of the Davidsons, wealthy and coming from old money.

But that’s not true, is it?

Thanks to his asshole dad.

“So then why are you here,” his lips turn up in a small, mocking smile, “Servant Girl?”

His low tone hits me in my belly and knocks the breath out of me for a second but I forge ahead. “I want to know if this is how you did it.”

“Did what?”

“Got me into NYU.”

Oh yeah, did I mention, I got into NYU.

My dream school.

That I thought was out of my reach potentially forever.

Not only because I couldn’t graduate on time but also because there was no way that I could afford it without a scholarship. But turns out, I not only got in — thanks to the generosity of one Homer Davidson, who convinced my parents to apply on my behalf and got me accepted even though it was too late to even apply — but now I don’t even need a scholarship to go. Because recently, we came into a lot of money.

Again courtesy of Homer Davidson.

He said that it was a reward for my parents’ hard work and a graduation present for me. He said that my future shouldn’t have to suffer for one mistake that I made two years ago. That he had full faith that I’d learned my lesson and that I’d go on to do great things.

Which means I leave for NYU in four weeks.

Or so my parents think.

Reign’s face has gone completely blank. “Don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You do,” I tell him, looking into his eyes. “You know all about what I’m talking about. You’re the only one who knew about my NYU plans and the only one who had the means to do anything about it. Oh, and let’s not forget about your legendary guilt. About everything. Because apparently, the whole world revolves around you and sits on your shoulders. Despite me very recently telling you differently.”

“I —”

“You put all of that together,” I raise my chin, interrupting him yet again and oh my God, it’s the best feeling in the world. “And add it to the fact that everyone knows how much you hated your father and his company — for good reason — but you’re working there anyway, makes me think that there’s a connection between the two. So we can argue about it all night if you want, or you could just tell me the truth.”

I know I’m not wrong.

I know there’s a connection.

Just like there was a connection between me vandalizing his room and him getting disowned.

I hear his long breath all the way over here, across the room where I’m standing. Then, “Fine. You cracked the code. Congratulations.”
