Because that was an excellent question. Did Julia want MaeBe for more than mere torture? Why would Julia expect that he would be better at finding the data than Mae? This would be a tech heavy op, and Mae was far better with tech than he was.
It would probably be more sensible to kidnap him and make MaeBe find the data. Of course, kidnapping him would be more difficult.
“She might,” he conceded. “It’s all the more reason to keep MaeBe safe, and I didn’t need another reason. We’re going to need a secure way out. We’re going to Lodge’s building. I’ve already got the go-ahead, and he’s got a secure underground garage so they can’t be sure who gets out of the car. We need to make sure they don’t know who gets into the car on this end.”
“All right.” West picked up his cell phone.
The door opened and West’s brother Wade strode in. “Hey, we’re closing down the club for the night. Big Tag’s orders.” Wade Rycroft looked over at Kyle. “I’m working on transportation. But first I need to make sure no one is about to storm the club. I wasn’t around for the first time this place blew up. I do not want to oversee building this place a third time. West, pull up all the traffic cams around here. Give me a four-block radius.”
West nodded and started to move over to a laptop. “Sure thing. And Kyle, some courier showed up with that package for you about an hour ago. I signed for it. Not sure why you had it sent here.”
He hadn’t. He hadn’t had anything sent here.
“Don’t you fucking open that.” Wade gestured for him to move back and then glared his brother’s way. “What the hell are you doing accepting packages? We don’t get supplies on Saturday night.”
“What was I supposed to do? I recognized the courier. It’s the same one the lawyers use when they need to send us stuff at the office.” The package West had pointed out was more like a folder. It was slender, the envelope mostly flat, but with a slight bump toward the end.
“It’s not a bomb.” Kyle’s gut twisted. He knew what that was. “It’s a phone. Has it rung yet?”
Why would Julia send him a phone? That wasn’t the right question. He knew why, but the timing was off. He would think it would come when she was sure she had MaeBe.
It didn’t make sense to send it beforehand. It would tip him off that something bad was about to happen.
He needed to go find MaeBe.
“No. It hasn’t done anything. Why would it ring?” West asked. “I didn’t open it. The courier said it was for you. I was about to come and find you. I don’t think it’s a bomb. I know what a bomb looks like.”
“No, you fucking don’t,” his brother shot back. “Though it is small for a bomb. You think it’s a phone? You think Julia’s trying to call you? I would assume she doesn’t have your cell number.”
He didn’t have a proper cell anymore. He had an endless set of burners he ran through like water. That was why she’d had to call into the office before. But if she knew he was at the office, wouldn’t she figure out he was spending his nights at Sanctum? Why would she let him know she knew where he was?
Unless she thought she had a way to make him do what she wanted him to do. “Is MaeBe still in the building?”
“We’ve got the alarms on. No one’s come in or out since Alex met Cooper and Tasha in the parking lot. Tasha’s car is the last one to come in,” West said. “Alex walked out and you can see him pacing, and then Tasha and Cooper show up about two minutes later. Alex’s rage pretty much shook the cameras. I’m shocked the kids stopped. At their age, I would have rolled right on by and lived my life out elsewhere.”
What the hell was happening? Nothing made sense. He pulled out his burner to call his mom and make sure everyone was accounted for up in New York. “Hey, West, can you call my brother and tell him to be careful tonight. Better yet, call Tessa and let her know what’s going on.”
West nodded and pulled his cell phone, disappearing into the hall. Kyle needed to make sure everyone was safe and where they needed to be.
But someone wasn’t.
A cold chill went up his spine.
“Wade, go and find Big Tag. Right fucking now. This is so much worse than Kala walking off on her own.”
The big Dom went still and then breathed out a long sigh. “Fuck.”
Wade jogged out toward the locker room.
That was the moment the package began to vibrate.
Kyle had been wrong. Julia’s timing was utterly perfect.
