“Wake him up, please.”
There was a brief little sigh, as if the devil himself was deeply disappointed, but would play along anyway, as devils always do when they make their little bargains.
“There will be a price to pay,” he said, giving one last warning.
“There always is,” Lucan replied.
The devil reached out with a flaming hand and ran it over Sebastian’s cheek in a paternal caress.
“Wake up, my son,” he whispered.
There was a deeper breath, a fluttering of lashes, and the devil disappeared as the prince opened his eyes.
Sebastian looked into Lucan’s face with such a beautiful blue gaze, the knight felt his heart break at the elegant vulnerability of the young man. The beast now seemed like a distant nightmare. Sebastian was perfect, and innocent, and beautiful, and entirely his.
Sebastian shifted and stretched in Lucan’s arms. “I must have passed out…”
“You did,” Lucan said. “Don’t worry. I know exactly where we need to go.”
“Not the Verdant Green?”
“Somewhere you will be safe,” Lucan said. Somewhere the world will be safe, he added silently in the privacy of his mind.
He kept holding onto Sebastian as the forest around them continued to burn. Flame and fate were equally inescapable. There in the smoke-filled haze of a disaster only beginning to unfold, Lucan promised himself he would never, ever let his boy go. There would be a happily ever after, no matter what it took.
