Blake doesn’t nod this time, though. His eyes narrow, and he just looks at me.

Shit. I’ve overplayed my hand. I’ve said too much, and now I’m going to suffer. My chest tightens, and I swallow hard.

But then slowly, a smile creeps over the cruel king’s lips. He nods, and I feel my body start to relax.

“Yes. Yes, it is.” He leans close, filling my nose with a hint of his cologne but beneath it, the scent of him. “But don’t let anyone know I told you that, okay?”

“Of course,” I reply. “But it’ll cost you.”

Again, what the hell am I saying? Why am I teasing this brutally powerful man?

Blake’s eyebrows go up. “Cost me? What more do you want? I’m already taking you to get a dress.”

So that’s where we’re headed.

“Hey, what’s wrong with the dress I’ve got on?” Aside from the fact that it cost me twenty-five bucks, of course.

“Well, you are rocking it, sweetie.” Blake winks. “But a body of that caliber deserves only the best.”

My body heats up instantly. My nipples go hard, and there’s nothing I can do to hide it, as this dress has nowhere to hide a bra. Blake definitely notices. I see the muscles just beneath his eyes twitch.

“You’ve got good game, Mr. Lockwood,” I say. If I can’t hide it, I might as well admit it. “I can’t imagine how many women you’ve won over with it.”

“Anna. I told you to call me Blake,” he says firmly. “And the answer to that would be none. I thought I told you, I haven’t felt this way in a long time.”

A laugh muscles its way from my lips.

“So you’re telling me that you just spotted me from your car? Sitting on the curb in the midst of a bad date, and you decided that I was special?”

Blake leans in, so close that I’m staring deep into his eyes—eyes that somehow lock me in place like some unseen force has taken hold of me.

He reaches a hand out and traces a line up my body, starting at my hip, moving up until he is about to touch my breast. I don’t know what to do. I take a breath, but he moves at the last minute, running his thumb up my arm to my shoulder and neck as his eyes smolder down at me.

He takes my jaw gently in his hand.

“I didn’t decide anything, Anna,” he tells me. “You did that to me. Because you are special.”

Anna

His touch is like a drug I never asked for. Things are happening to me all over that shouldn’t be happening.

Not only am I blushing, but my heart is racing, I’m desperately trying not to sweat, and there’s a heat growing between my legs. Oh, and my nipples are still hard too and are showing no signs of going down.

Why am I drawn to this man? This killer?

I know he’s done terrible things. He’s a tyrant. He’s cruel. He threatened Trevor with a knife, for crying out loud. I should be terrified of him, and yet I’m feeling the total opposite right now. In fact, thoughts I shouldn’t be having about him at all are running through my mind.

“How do you know I’m special?” I ask. “Are you psychic or something?”

Blake smiles down at me. The way his eyes focus on me somehow cause me to feel small and build me up at the same time. “You’re special because of how you make me feel, Anna.”

Oh God, he’s laying it on thick now.

The heat between my thighs increases. I may not know much about men, but I know enough to see that this man truly wants me. And I don’t know what to do with that information. Or even how to begin to process it.

I feel so small seated next to him. Like a tiny little bug that he could reach out and squash with the palm of his hand.

“Horny?” I ask. “Like how all men feel when they see a woman?”

Better go for the semi-hostile counter approach. Maybe that will work. But Blake just cracks up laughing. He looks at me for a long moment before responding.

“No one’s made me laugh in a long time, Anna. But yes, I absolutely do want to fuck you. Just like every other man who’s ever met you in your life.”

I scoff and burst out laughing myself.

“Right.”

“Yet somehow, right now, you’re single,” he muses. “And that silly bastard, Trevor, lucked into a date with you.”

“I hate to break it to you, mister,” I sigh, shaking my head. “But Trevor didn’t luck into anything. He was my first date since I was fourteen.”

Blake looks at me with a blank stare for some time, like he can’t believe what he just heard.

“Ha ha, very funny,” he replies.

“I wish I was joking.”

“And that date when you were fourteen. He turned into your long-term boyfriend?” He asks.
