Then I turn and brace myself against the mirror as I come to terms with the new reality, letting out a breath. “What did you take?”
My grandfather’s voice sounds old on the other end of the comms. “Nothing of importance. Just another subject.”

“You’ll get them. I told you I would record it, and I did. You can see it all for yourself whenever you’re ready. But listen to me, Ambrose. The important thing is that we did it this time. I can feel my grandfather leaving the room on the other side of the two-way mirror so I don’t bother saying anything else.
The woman I choked is on the floor, on her hands and knees looking up at me, gasping for breath. I exhale, then cross the distance between us in four steps and offer her my hand. “Brose Sinclair. New partner, I take it?”
Her smile is immediate. She accepts my offer of a hand up and as I pull her to her feet she says, “Hattie Miller. Nice to finally meet you.”
