“Okay, we can go at half past five and then go for dinner,” Jace says in the voice of someone used to giving orders and having them followed.

As much as I want to go for dinner with him, I need to go home and be alone tonight. I need to think about the clinic and figure out ways to help me achieve my goal faster. I also need some alone time. There has been too much excitement today.

“I can’t,” I tell him then quickly rephrase. “I can go down and see Sarah and the baby, but I can’t go for dinner tonight. I’d already made plans.”

He looks shocked by my refusal but he quickly recovers. “Oh. Fine. We can go tomorrow or another day.”

“Tomorrow’s fine.” I don’t need to be told that going for dinner with Jace is not a good idea. It’s bad enough that my panties dampen just from him throwing a glance my way. I’ll be begging him to take me home and ravish me by the end of the evening.

The rest of the afternoon moves fast and before I know it, it’s five thirty. I shut down my computer and tidy the desk, ready for the following day.

Jace emerges from his office.

“Ready?” he asks.

I grab my handbag. “Let’s go.”

No one stares or finds it odd that I’m walking with the CEO. Rank doesn’t seem to be a big thing here and I like it. It’s a few minutes before visiting hours but we go straight to Sarah’s private room. One of the perks of visiting with the CEO.

Jace knocks on the door and pushes it in. He holds the door to let me go in first. I catch a whiff of his expensive-smelling cologne as I go past. Everything about Jace reeks of class and wealth. He is a man clearly out of my league. I must be insane to think that he would be attracted to me—a lowly temporary PA. I’m sure he dates women from the same circles as his family.

Sarah already has a visitor and before she introduces him I can tell that it’s her husband.

“There she is,” she says and breaks into a giggle. “I was telling Steve that I’m sure you handed in your resignation letter from the trauma I gave you this morning.” It’s hard to believe that it’s the same Sarah as the one we helped downstairs this morning. She does look tired, but happy as well.

We all have a laugh and I assure her that I’m okay. The baby is in Steve’s arms and he’s absolutely gorgeous with the tiniest nose I’ve ever seen and the cutest little lips.

“He’s beautiful,” I tell them, my voice filled with awe.

Jace offers to hold the baby and I watch him in admiration. I couldn’t for the life of me hold a baby that tiny. What if he breaks? We visit them for half an hour and then say goodbye.

“I’m so happy for them,” I tell Jace as we stroll out of the clinic. Sarah has this look of contentment as is she’s perfectly satisfied with her life. A pang of envy comes over me. It seems out of reach to imagine myself at that stage in life.

“Seeing a new baby makes you appreciate the important things in life,” Jace says.

“Family,” I say.

“Yeah.”

He walks me to my car even though I protest and tell him I’ll be fine.

“I was raised better than that,” Jace says and stands to watch as I unlock my car and get in.

I shut the door, insert the key in the ignition and slide the window open. “Thanks.” I wish I’d said yes to the dinner invitation. I don’t want to part ways with him.

Chapter 4: Jace

My favorite time of day is morning when the clinic is relatively quiet and most of the day staff have not come in yet. I walk through the different departments saying good morning to everyone, then I go up to my office. I’m surprised to find Olivia already at her desk. I glance at my wristwatch to confirm the time.

“Good morning. What are you doing here so early?”

She smiles and my heart does a somersault in my chest. What is it with her that gets me reacting like a lust-struck teenager?

“Morning,” she said. “I like to come to work early. Can I get you some coffee?”

My gaze drops to her mouth. She has sinfully lush, bow-shaped lips that beg to be nibbled on. I can only see the top half of her and even though she’s wearing a cream-colored blouse that covers up everything, the outline of her full breasts is very clear.

“Only if you’ll have it with me,” I tell her. The words are out of my mouth before I can control them.

Her eyes widen. We both know that my invitation was not professional.
